Charlie Schlueter of the Boston Symphony would always say (and I'm paraphrasing here) - "The hardest thing about playing trumpet is coming to the realization that it's actually easy". What you're saying on some level sounds foreign to me, yet on another level MAKES TOTAL SENSE. Thank you - I needed to hear this.

Your methods challenge everything I have come to understand about playing in the last 15 years, but I must say every video i watch MAKES SENSE. I see great horn players play effortlessly in multiple ranges and tempos. I always feel a lot of tension in my face and lungs when going into higher registers and always thought, there must be a better way. I can't wait to start attempting these new methods to my playing.

Oh my god, I am a amateur trumpet player, I reached the high E, and doing the auau exercises until my muscles felt well, I took my trumpet and I could play a high G, almost without any difficulty. Its incredible Thanks a lot !. Greetings for Chile

Well... I'm an amature trumpet player and I've been playing for 10 years and my range tops at G on top of the staff. I've never been able to play high C in my life. Many people in my position would give up playing this instrument long time ago, perhaps after couple of years. I still continue and I lost any hope to play higher than I can. At times I get really frustrated but most of the time I realize that life is just what it is.

@WhatTheFlyinFudge You are totally right about the loss of range, endurance and sound etc. This is a gradual progression that over time will morph into the way you play. Cheers

@Jonathan Gonzalez Hey Jonathon, I am not a particular fan of the pencil exercise as it may encourage pinching down of the lip tissue that should be free to vibrate, but more importantly, the pencil exercise can install a mental belief that you must be stronger in the lips to play. The amount of isometric benefit from the pencil exercise can be derived from general playing of the instrument. Cheers, Greg

@WhatTheFlyinFudge Thanks for your comment, it made me smile. I love his approach and when done correctly it is. The process of learning how to do it correctly for some is easy aswell but for most, myself included, it is an ongoing process of elimination. Let the ear tell you what you want to sound like and then experiment, hopefully with the help and direction of some useful information and a sequence of exercises that makes sense. Thanks again!!!

You are a smart man and seriously awesome trumpet player thank you for helping me with my understanding and playing
@alarmman0811 жыл бұрын
When I was a dedicated player I used tooth pic on each corner and played with them in while I practiced my scales. That helped me play high as well as a 6a4a but you got to practice a long time to get used to that mouth piece
@WhatTheFlyinFudge11 жыл бұрын
I'm no certified expert, but from what I've read, there's an adjustment period. You may lose tone & endurance, due to re-training muscles that weren't utilized before. My guess is you'll have to gauge what kind of losses you're willing to suffer for new chops. Playing lead for Harry Connick? = high stakes, take it slow & suffer less loss. Theatre gig? = medium stakes, take it faster & suffer more loss. Wedding band? = Fire away, cowboy! Anyway, hope this helps

This is a process of developing new sensations that you will be able to carry over into your regular playing over time. Do the exercises at the start of the day then carry on with your regular playing. I was working professionally the whole time so you can too. cheers

@CJHissle You need to play where it is natural for you to play. Have you done the exercises in this video with a tissue? If your aperture forms and sends your air straight out, then an adjustment might need to be made. If your airstream goes off centre, then that is your natural setup. Cheers, Greg

Hi and thanks a million for your great lessons! I've been playing a long time, mostly jazz, and have gotten increasingly sloppy with bad habits over the years. Recently being recruited to teach young beginning students, I'm realizing just how terrible my technique is, trying to play precise classical music! Mostly, it's my tongue-- which thrusts out between the lips at every attack, and when I try and bring it in, I sound like a new student, so weak and lame! So, the tip should stay anchored below behind the bottom teeth? Thanks!
@mysterytomastery110 жыл бұрын
Ron Robbins Hey Ron, the tongue is used to RELEASE air to hit lips that are ready to RESPOND to the flow. I don't mind where the tongue sits as long as it is natural and works effectively. Try leaving the tip behind the lower teeth, it may work for you. Tonguing between the lips probably disrupts the airstream and lips oscillation more than you would want but then again, many great players tongue that way. Find what is easiest and sounds the best! Greg
@ronrobbins273710 жыл бұрын
Wow, I thought I was the only one doing that! I've been trying to force that tongue in back of the teeth but it just doesn't feel natural so now with your "permission" I might try going back to my old habit. You are awesome!

Air pressure leads flow. There is no flow without pressure. Sound is "pressure" waves, not "flow waves". Sound power comes from air power. Air power is pressure x flow AGAINST the resistance of the sound in the instrument. The flow depends on this resistance.
@mysterytomastery15 жыл бұрын
Hey Step Wave, without watching it back again, I am pretty sure we actually agree. The first line is "in Simple Terms" in regards to any easy to understand approach to range development. Yes there is a change in "pressure" but that is not really what I'm getting here. Thanks for watching. PLEASE check out the free Largo Stage of the New WindWorks course, it goes in to a lot more detail. Cheers, Greg

This teaches you how to play high and soft, but how do you play high and loud?
@mysterytomastery16 жыл бұрын
Steven Holloway Hey Steven, thanks for your great question. A bigger aperture allows for greater air displacement therefore more volume. This is explained in great detail in the FREE Largo Status Stage Course at WindWorks mysterytomastery.com/windworks-sign-up/ Come and work through it and you’ll be really clear on what you need to do. All the best, Greg

Thanks. I'd much rather take advice on range from someone (like yourself) who actually lived through playing with tension in their early years, then had a breakthrough in re-learning how to play this way. The guys that have it easy are almost "unconsciously competent". It's hard for them to verbalize what's actually going right with them. I've heard tons of Maynard's clinics, and while I enjoyed his stories, none of what he said sunk in. Anyway, I'm babbling - G'Day Mate!
