When it comes to backwards compatibility, I still think it'd be ideal if either: A. You'd put a disc from a previous PS console into a PS5 or PS6 and be able to play that game directly off the disc. Or B. Old discs could be used as digital keys to download a digital version of that game.

If you still have the old discs I feel like Scenario B would be ideal. If you owned physical games since the PS3 it would be cumbersome to sift through a library of physical discs over 3 generations of games. Even now, I wish buying a physical copy allowed you to at least use it without the disc if installed to the console. With this kind of system it would be if the game requires the internet to confirm licenses and your internet goes out, you'll be able to then use your physical disc to make it work.

Rpcs3 just now has games being playable at a decent framerate still with graphical issues around. It isn't some crazy emulator. Ps3 is notoriously difficult to emulated and i would bet that some proprietary hardware would be needed in the ps5 to actually do ps3 games any justice. Something like that is weighed in cost effectiveness.

Implementing backwards compatibility is probably not the challenge. If anything is holding them back from doing this it’s likely the huge cost to test the games. For Xbox backwards compatibility, Microsoft say it took them half a million hours of effort to test the games to ensure they work properly. That is probably a 50 million dollar minimum investment.

@@dapperfan44 - As a physical media collector I have to disagree. If one thing breaks it’s all broken. If my PS3 dies, I get another. While I’m without it, I can play PS4 games on my PS5 or play N64, GameCube, PS1 etc. When I’m old, my son can sell the games and hardware if he has no interest in th and make some good money. When your all in one machine dies, everything is gone until you get another. When you change hobbies, interests or worse, the all in one machine will fetch nowhere near the same money as actual games and hardware. Each to their own I suppose. The more you love the all in one, the more physical games there are in the world for me to buy.

Of course the PS5 is going to stay relevant for years, even after the PS6 drops. The last big leap in graphics and tech was really from the PS3 to the PS4-since then it’s been more about smaller upgrades. Honestly, most people just play games like Fifa, Cod, Fortnite or f2p gachas like Genshin, which run perfectly fine on the PS4/5 and even mobile. If you’re not obsessed with having the newest hardware, there’s really no need to upgrade anytime soon...

Exclusivity itself does not bring value to us as the consumer. If a game sell better, it is only because the game itself is great, and what we are paying for is the experience of playing the game itself. For me personally, I feel that FF has became too dark and serious, compared to earlier titles during the days of PS1 - PS3.

@@morsecode980 yes as I said, no reason at all to make PS6 BC with PS4 when PS5 already is, despite OP "seeing" this happening (with crystal ball perhaps?). PS6 could be priced much higher than PS5 and still sell, but it would need exclusives that aren't also available on previous generations and also aren't just remasters to appeal to the wider public and not just whales who will buy everything just because it has Sony branding. PS5 does have games, to suggest otherwise would be daft, but it should have more at this point and that IMHO is why we're still seeing cross gen support so late into the lifecycle. The only real incentive to upgrade to PS5 is "more power" that isn't even needed to play the vast majority of games, which were built to run on PS4. The Pro was not needed at all in any way whatsoever, and I can't see a valid reason for PS6 to be in development right now beyond the fact that new things inevitably sell. Very strange time for hardware I think. Companies obviously want to make money, but they aren't doing much to encourage people to spend it. A PS6 that plays PS4 games, or even PS3 games, is not a big selling point. People only still play PS4 because there's still no reason to upgrade beyond that. The reality is that very few people (comparatively) play games from before the PS4 generation so it would be a waste of resources to focus too heavily on implementing this level of BC. Sony are no doubt well aware of this, which is why it always tickles me when people think it's some big, important idea they're working on. They want to move on to PS5/6 only, but to do so requires far more output, and quality output at that, than they are capable of producing.

As someone that liked the grind of suicide squad im happy they will open up a offline mode as well. The game made poor sales and not much money and they still put extra work for offline mode is rare these days. Games like The Crew 1 just get removed for no good reason and no offline mode and that game was a big success and now no one can play it even if you paid for it!

Nice to see we have a name to the face of the people who gave us rewind and save states for old Playstation games like Wild ARMs and Daxter, making the trophies for those games much more accessible. I hope they go through with this PS3 emulator program as I'd love to see rewind and save states for PS3 exclusives like Rayman Origins and Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction. Come on, we need trophy support for Tools of Destruction and a Crack in Time reboot that DOESN'T freeze in the middle of a cutscene! ;)

I am, and always will be convinced, that the best solution at this point is to wait for the better CPU of PS6, from there get RPCS3 ported to use PS APIs and just emulate PS3. Sure, not everything will run well, but the list is already there and at that point the work lies into improving RPCS3. Yes it won't be perfect, but so is Proton and yet the Steam Deck is one of the most beloved hand helds out there. This way they can just sell whatever digital thing there is on the PS3 store to PS6 consoles, without extra work, and with a warning about the playability of the content (or by not making it purchasable if it's really that bad). And of course, people could just pop in a disc and restore what little is left of PlayStation public image. I mean PS5 was released in 2020, with an AMD CPU that was already relatively old by that point, today CPUs with the power to emulate PS3s can be found for cheap for consumers, let alone Sony. It's doable, and if there isn't at least this much of an upgrade from PS5 to PS6 hardware wise then it's not even worth buying the console in the first place.

Honestly, at this point, and especially with how Playstation does emulation with PS1 and 2 games, I'd rather stick to RPCS3, cause they won't ever add the games I'd wanna play to the PS+ classics, so it wouldn't change anything about me not being able to play the games I'd want to play anyway. Because Sony doesn’t want the RPCS3 team to know the inner workings of the PS3 and use it to improve the RPCS3 emulator. Likewise, the RPCS3 team doesn’t want to sign an NDA for Sony which will prevent them from further improving RPCS3 and may even risk shutting the emulator down completely.

Well, RPCS3 is an open source project with people across the world contributing to varying degrees, so they can't realistically collaborate with "the people that make it", Sony could ask some people individually, which they did try to do with people working on PS2 emulation, but they all turned Sony down for obvious reasons. And I doubt any of the people contributing to RPCS3 would be any more willing. Sony could also theoretically use the source code of RPCS3 to make their own emulator for the PS5. But they would have to A: provide any changes they make as source code. (They don't want to do this) Or B: illegally make their version of the emulator closed source, violating the license agreement.

Given how PS3 emulation is on PC, you can run a PS3 emulator on a laptop chip, without any dedicated GPU. ... There is no technical reason not to have it on PS5 (licenses, monetary reasons, etc. are something else).

Without gaining the full rights to RPCS3 they'll need to make their own from scratch, which hasn't happened because the PS4 just can't handle it, they never had a dedicated Emulation team before PS5 and They've been trying to focus on new PS1, PS2 and PSP emulators that are optimised for PS5 and maybe also any future x86 consoles going forwards.

The issue with emulation is, no matter how well written, cannot perfectly simulate the enviro of the ps3 (or any target system for that matter) so that _every ps3 game will run as if natively._ The avg consumer just want their microwave to work, whatever food they heat up. Even with PCSX2 (a super mature emu), 15% of games have various running glitches. If Sony just released a ps3 emu, the avg person just won't accept a bunch of games are just gonna be super glitched.

If PlayStation starts emulating the PS3 maybe I’ll pick up the PS6 when that comes out. For now I’m still playing my PS3 daily online. The only question I have is how much would this service cost since online multiplayer is not free on current gen consoles. It’ll probably end up in the top tier of PS Plus.

The ONLY acceptable solution for backwards compatibility is if a hardware add-on is released which plugs into the ps5/ps6 that allows us to play the old games in our collection. I would pay big money for such an add-on and I know I'm not the only one! It sure would be nice to play Expert+ drums for Guitar Hero on a system that can actually handle a blazing streak of fast notes, damn it! 😂

I'm so bummed about the canceled Twisted Metal project. Rumor said it was potentially going to have PSVR2 support, too. See, those are the kinds of things Playstation needs to help sell more PSVR2 is first party titles like that getting PSVR2 support in a hybrid fashion, doesn't have to be a VR only title.

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but I don't get the whole thing about "ps3 being too complicated and hard to emulate" when sony made a lot of ports and remastered versions of ps3 exclusives that were originally built for the cell processor for the ps4

Now that Jim Ryan’s gone, I have hope that PlayStation will “course correct” and return to being more gamer focussed over being profit focussed. Jim obviously did a good job with the PS5 but it was clear he was more focussed on making money over anything else and I didn’t really like his direction for the brand.

You can play PS1 games on a phone, PS2 on good android, and PS3 on cheap mobile PCs like Deck which is a PS5

Suicide Squad isn’t that bad or live service’y as it was made out to be. The offline option is there already. In the game settings you can find the option to take your online progress and convert it to an offline save. You can do this indefinitely but cannot progress the offline save and put it to the online progression. No big deal there.

PS3 Emulation on PC has been pretty decent and has come a long way. I actually packed away my ps3 because of this. Hopefully Sony does implement backwards compatibility, granted they’ll want to make as much money as possible off it.

I would 100% buy a tonne of PS3 games for running on PS5, but it would be on the understanding that it would run smoother (I'm thinking of the glitchy mess that FO3 and New Vegas were on PS3 vs how they were on PC for example).

From a business POV, I don’t think Sony would do PS3-emulation if they continue with their Sony-hosted streaming PS3/PS4 service. I might be wrong, but I don’t see a way where that service would still be profitable in its current state if pretty much all the fan favourites PS3 games are be available through emulation on PS5/PS6. Would be cool though.

As of now they have physical PS3s in data racks, would be way cheaper to stream from x86 monsters and let people use PS5. Sony just thinks better options will take away profits

the service is profitable because it's included with premium, but you know what would get more subscribers/profit?? NATIVE PS3 emulation, and them getting rid of those god awful servers from 2014 lmao

Their PS3 servers won't last forever so they need to find a solution sooner rather than later, plus also they'd get a lot more revenue from PS+ Deluxe/Premium in the long run because there are so many countries that still can't access Premium because they don't have the PS3 streaming servers in those countries.

What needs to be standard is any new console needs to be able to run all console's games before it. I had ps3 games i had to throw away because my ps3's disc drive failed. I had a copy of black ops 2 and i bought all the dlc to it but can't use it anymore.

Personally, I've got nothing against games being backward-compatible, but enough about cross-gen! I'm not buying a PS5 console to play games designed for the PS4, and I'm not buying a PS6 to play PS5 games either. It's high time for Sony to take risks and prove to us that they're still capable of innovation. The last 15 years have been a succession of announcements and disappointments. I've lost faith in the brand. They've laughed at us too much, taken us for suckers.
