An anemometer is a device used for measuring the wind speed. This digital anemometer (Benetech GM816) also have the temperature sensor. I would like to use it to measure the air flow form 3D printer fans in my new comparison video. Anemometer on Banggood side: www.banggood.c...

Damn, looking forward to the series about fan comparison. And always impressed how you have so many interesting ideas and can upload so frequently. Keep up the good work and greetings from Estonia.

Nice review! I find the bottom end more important, very low speeds are harder to measure and how easily the sensor rotates is the critical part. I started off trying a fan as a sensor but when I saw how badly I was measuring at low velocities I bought a meter similar to yours. The sensor moves much better, very little friction. I can now sense airflow in small areas around a piece of equipment. The other important measurement device is a mist/fog maker to visualize the flow direction, see turbulence, reach of the air stream etc. You also identified a problem with the meter, reading it whilst measuring. You can’t always see the display where you want to measure. Your camera is a good solution but not so easy if you want to measure in a small area behind some equipment. A remote display, or removable, would be very handy.

Thanks a lot for the test, esp. for trying to determine accuracy. Anemometers interact differently with open vs closed and turbulent vs laminar flow. When using one to measure the wind speed outside of your car, the surface of the anemometer has no serious impact on the wind itself or the speed of your car. But when you place it on top of a PC fan, effectively a very short wind tunnel, that is only partly covered by the anemometer, the added air resistance will actually reduce the speed of the air, if only by a small amount, and esp. the non moving parts will act as a barrier. The error introduced will depend on how much of the fan is covered, so it isn't a linear error that can simply be ignored, as smaller fans will be more effected. For your purpose it will still work fine, but you could improve accuracy a bit when measuring fan speed by simply removing the yellow rubber protector which is both rather thick, adding to the static surface, and made out of a non-smooth material that adds friction.

Great video mate , I was looking for a cheap anemometer and came across this exact model but was worried about the accuracy . Now I know it is good enough for what I need.

Great video dude. You are strong in math. İ am curious how one would go about calculating air changes per minute given the m/s air speed?

if something has speed of 1 m/s (one meter per second) , then in one minute it will go longer, this means 60 m/min

For part cooling I think flow rate will be important but for the cold end I don't think it really matters. Modern bimetal heat breaks don't need much cooling so sound verses the added complexity with buck converts is more important, i.e. are noctuas worth the hassle. Most peoples coldend cooling is already overkill as is their main board and PSU cooling.

I will test only the fans without 3D printer anyway. (40x40x10 and 40x40x20). I want to measure the air flow but also the current and the noise (I am not sure that I can measure the noise, my tool measure only from 30 dB). The noise is important for coldend fans too.
