I think this was filmed during the time that it was big in certain TV shows to have team members cussing and shouting at one another. After the shouting match is over, they follow the people that got into the little spat and interview them for added drama. Normally I'd probably make fun of Adam for being a wuss, but I grew up on a farm, and we used the brand of fencer they used on this episode, and the very thought of coming in contact with it was enough to shy me away from it. The one time I did accidentally come in contact with it, it literally knocked me on my ass, and was not funny at all (my brother, who normally looks upon any sort of pain on my part as a chance to mess with me, was stone-cold silent after this particular incident). Adam was entirely justified in being a little pissed about this, and I think everyone involved was lucky the cameras were rolling, as I think it tempered Adam's rage. All things considered, he's actually a much better sport about it than I think most other people would be.
@doggonemess110 жыл бұрын
Exactly - right on! People don't realize that an electric fence and a 'cattle prod' or stun gun, or whatever are totally different things. A cattle prod delivers a sharp pain locally. The electric fence is a HUGE current, with higher amperage, designed to deter animals - not people. The feeling is totally different, like being shocked by a shoddy electrical socket. You do feel it, and it's a horrible experience. Especially since we all know that any current like that can kill, given enough time, and we've all been taught to stay away from electricity. So it's hard to take a hit like that a just blow it off. Congrats to Adam for taking it so well. I have so much respect for him from this.

For everyone that is comparing stun guns to electric fences: a stun gun delivers a claimed voltage of 50,000 to 100,000 volts at 0.003 amps. That stings in the spot where it touches, and makes you not want to touch it again. Unless someone dares you to do it for 10 bucks. Then you touch it again and get 10 bucks. Not that bad. An electric fence is 10,000 volts at 0.150 amps (50 times more amperage, 5 times less voltage), which doesn't sting. It feels like you're going to die. Have someone hit you in the chest with a freaking bat, and you're getting close to the sensation. So for everyone saying that Adam is a wuss, try it out, then offer your opinion. I bet you'll change your mind.
@rubendashlin822410 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaining this. It was actually his reaction in this scene that stayed buried in my subconscious when I first saw it so that whenever I saw him on TV or youtube I immediately felt a strong dislike for him, like he was a know-it-all egotistical asshole whose nasty arrogant attitude caused me to not appreciate his knowledge, good advice and skills. My first thought was the same as others, that his ego was bruised by being pranked by the supporting cast when only he should be the one pranking and humiliating them. I saw him as the type of guy who makes fun of others and expects them to take it with a sheepish smile and embarrassed chuckle but when he gets a taste of his own medicine he becomes passive aggressive and tries to make you feel like you are the worst person for committing such disgraceful acts thereby turning the tables to make you look like the asshole who should feel really bad. I guess it was just so out of character for him since he’s the jokester of the show. But from your explanation I now understand that the prank was analogous to someone smacking you in the back of the head with a nail-covered 2x4 and expecting you to laugh while you pick the pieces of brain oozing out of your skull. @@tristanssimpson1324 I don't know what you think is a lethal amperage, but you can die from a single amp shock if you have a heart condition. OSHA guidelines state that 50 milliamps is enough to stop someone's heart in a drastic situation. Anything above 1 amp is a serious risk of heart failure. You do not need both high amperage and high voltage for it to become fatal. The average 12-volt battery contains 48 ampere-hours, or 48 hours of continuous 1-amp output. That's 1 amp on the CONSERVATIVE side, assuming that the battery is drawing the bare minimum power output, which is likely not the case most of the time. And that's enough to kill you. The most dangerous part about an electric shock is that you have a good to fair chance of losing control of your muscles and curling your hands/fingers inwards when you get a continuous zap, causing you to be unable to let go of what's shocking you. I've heard tens of horror stories of electricians working alone being in that exact situation and it's terrifying. Someone is underestimating electricity and has no idea what they're talking about. Don't fuck around with electricity, guys. Sources: www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/2019-04/Basic_Electricity_Materials.pdf www.jdpower.com/cars/shopping-guides/how-many-amps-is-a-car-battery

Which is totally different and extremely likely to be his basic personality, unfortunately.

Gj23jk2 Its not funny though, the fact it had a huge effect on the cast who expected that shock it must felt like he died for a moment with the fence. Adam did something I couldn't have done in that situation which was back off and cool his head before coming back.
@Gj23jk29 жыл бұрын
TempusKing Horse-shit. He knew instantly what they'd done to him. He was butthurt and mad, not scared. You have a gross overestimation of what touching a fence feels like. I have done it unintentionally dozens of times, including with both hands. And while it hurts badly, I'm smart enough to know that it's not lethal, and could never be lethal. The current isn't enough. What is this shit with "feeling like he died"? No, he felt like he got hit with a big electric shock because his employees pranked him.
@TempusKing9 жыл бұрын
Gj23jk2 Something completely untrustworthy,completely unprofesssional, completely out of limits of their partnership. There is no pranking about it. For all the level of safety they try to reach, it was broken for a laugh and it wasn't funny. Its not that it could've killed him, its not that he came off unharmed. Its that they broke his trust and caused him immense pain. Let me tell you not everyone is used to being shocked by a eletrice fence, and only an idiot would accept working in a place that your fellow employees could accidentally take things out of hand. And lets not even begin that non-lethal can easily turn lethal. People die from pepper spray because allergic reactions. People can die from a taser shock. Its just circumstances and the condition of the person being shocked. Especially going with a device not to be used on people, its just idiotic and shameful. In the end there no reason to do the prank. And a lot of damn good reasons to be upset to the point of suing or getting someone fired. You can even see it in the video and the pranksters reaction. The ones who shocked themselves knew its a bad idea. Only Karie was smiling the one who didn't shock herself, the other two eyes were darting side to side and the smile was uneasy. They even lose it later when adam explains how plausible it is, the only one laughing again is Karie.

In some places this type of thing is a good enough reason to "take someone behind a shed and beat the crap out of them" (an actual quote from a ex-coworker of mine), in others its an "oh get over it" attitude. For some regions even joking with them verbally is enough to make them quite angry with you, its a lot to do with the norms for where you are from. This is worth keeping in mind in life as you deal with other people. It's best to have a good idea how someone will react before pulling a prank, particularly one involving pain. Where I am from this is more of an "oh get over it" type of prank, but I know others would get legitimately very mad and other people will just jump on the outrage bandwagon for the fun of piling on. Just so we are clear though, there was no serious health risk here, the problem with the prank is truly more about short term physical pain and the trust factor and Adam specifically asking about the electric fence device and them lying about it right before he touches it. For some people that is unforgivable on its own, while for others trust is about the big things (e.g. don't steal, be reliability for critical situations, etc..) and it is OK to playfully mislead for short term pranks, jokes, etc.. Something to consider for those who "don't get" how other people are reacting.

I can´t blame him for behaving the way he did. Shock like that hurts like hell AND he did ask if they had hooked up the electric fence. He trusted his friends and coworkers and got a massive shock. Pain like that might have been tolerable if he had been prepared to it but he wasn't because he trusted their word. I think he was actually quite considerate. He was hurt and upset and needed a moment to calm down - so he said he´d be back in few minutes. Everybody felt bad but after all they made up :)

If you've ever been shocked by high voltage, then you KNOW why Adam was as pissed as he was. Electric shocks hurt really really really bad. I don't doubt Tory for a minute when he said it was a "211 out of 10". I got shocked by an ungrounded power outlet once, and that's only 200 volts, and it was easily one of the top 10 most painful things I've ever felt, up there with a dislocated jaw, broken teeth, chemical burns, and having one of my toes mutilated in a lawnmower.

The cut at 3:38 obviously hid the part where he reacted strongly, which makes for bad TV as it should. At 3:35 you see a camera move into frame, poorly produced and cringe worthy. Yikes, I remember this. Adam was absolutely right to be angry. Not only does it hurt when you intentionally touch it and expect it, but the shock when you're not expecting is much worse. They work in an environment that has the potential to be very dangerous, and you need to trust each other. If you don't have that trust ... That and ... his arms make the circuit, so where does that current go? That current passes through one hand, up the arm, through the chest, and down the other arm. As Adam says, it passes through the heart. Electric shocks going through your heart carry a chance of causing arrhythmia, which needs medical attention. If you happen to have an existing condition that you're not aware of, then that medical attention might become considerably more urgent, like "CPR and call a damn ambulance" urgent. They absolutely should have known better.

I don't mind a prank among friends, but this was SO awful in so many ways. Adam sourced it way before anyway, meaning they had to LIE about it. Which already makes it unfunny to me. Adam is clearly 'hurt' and visually appears to feel betrayed. Who we all know as a good guy and a great sport. If HE can't laugh about it, he's really miffed. Kari's awkward remark right after his reaction seals the coffin. It's so obviously forced and completely unfunny. If someone really did set this up and got fired for it, it was well deserved. Partly for it being a douchey move, but mostly for it making the show look cheap, awful and staged.
