Adam gave an interview about the scariest moment on the show for him and the crew, this one was it. The car belonged to a smoker and, even though they cleaned pounds of cigarette butts from the vehicle, the smoke residual came out and burned his eyes (you can see it). He also breathed from the apparatus upside down, which brought water into his lungs (you can see him turning it upside down afterwards). The crew was seconds from breaking the window with axes before they escaped.

This scenario actually happened to my mom! She was driving home one cold Indiana winter morning after working a double-shift at a local hospital, and fell asleep at the wheel when driving home. She awoke when the car hit water (she had driven off the road and into a pond). She said that realizing what had happened, she just sat and waited for the car to settle, thinking that the pond was only a couple of feet deep. However, it was deeper, and the car continued to sink until completely submerged. Unable to open the doors because of the pressure of the water against the outside of the car, she (amazingly!) thought to roll down the driver's window and hoped to just swim out. Aware that once she began to roll down the window that the car interior would completely flood, she held her breath, rolled down the manual window (this was the winter of 1972, the windows were manual, not electric); the interior flooded with water, and she began her escape. It would have worked, but she found that the heavy winter coat she was wearing wouldn't allow her to fit through the window once the car interior flooded and she was holding her breath underwater. So she pulled herself back into the car, fought out of her winter coat (a long fur coat), then swam out of the window to the surface. Once she broke the surface, she saw that several people that had witnessed her car go into the water had pulled over and were standing in the snow at the edge of the lake waiting to help. She swam to them and they pulled her out, and she was taken to the local hospital. She stayed in the ICU for several days after nearly drowning (and hypothermia from the cold water), then was sent home where she stayed in bed and slept for several more days, recovering. When all of this happened I was 11 years old and had been on a school-sponsored camping trip for 3 days and was not told by anyone at the camp about the accident. After returning from the camp to school, I got on the school bus to go home, when the bus driver told me that he "... was sorry to hear about what happened to my mom." "What happened to my mom?!?" I asked, and his words scared the hell out of me; he was flabbergasted that I was unaware. He told me the story how she almost drowned, and I cried. Hell, that was _46 years ago_ and just retelling the story is making me cry again... Anyway, when I got home (and I couldn't get home fast enough to see my mom), she was at home, but asleep, and still recovering from the cold and the bruising from the wreck. I wanted to go in and see her and hung her, but my dad wouldn't let me, saying it was important that we not disturb her, she needed to sleep and rest. I don't think I was ever more scared in my life, and to this day, I am so *FULL-ON IMPRESSED* with how resourceful, brave, and intelligent, my mom was when faced, *very* suddenly, with this underwater-car scenario, and on her own without any pre-planning or auxiliary air, came out of it, on her own, alive. God bless my mom. She pulled through it ok, she passed away about 10 years ago, I miss her so much. I love you mom, I'm still so proud of you, and I'll see you again someday soon. --Love, Rachel

@mystereoheart25797 жыл бұрын
Yup, I came here from a Reddit post where he explained this, he said that because the car turned over that second time, he was right-side up and his diver was upside-down, still in the seat, so when he took the regulator from him it was upside down. He said the absolute last thing you want to do when you've got the regulator on is take it back off again, but he inhaled a bunch of water and he had no choice. Sounds absolutely terrifying. He had a pretty badass quote, too. He said the thing running through his mind at that exact moment was "Calm people life, panicked people die."
@Bobbyfawn7 жыл бұрын
you misunderstood, it's not bad to take a regulator out, it's that psychologically it's very hard to do because everything in your body is telling you to keep it in and try breathing. He had to override that thought and take it out

In a scenario where Adam did not have access to both an extra can of air and a SCUBA diver, he would have too. The solution is to immediately, as soon as you hit the water, either roll down the window nearest to you so you can open the door, or use a window breaker. As long as you do that, you won't need to hold your breath at all

The part that gets me is that in interviews Adam revealed that car was owned by a smoker, evidently they had to clear over 500 cigarettes out of the car before testing, but as a result of all that smoking residue when he opened his eyes in the water, they burned, so he had to keep them closed. If he had been able to open his eyes I think he would have made it. Obviously I would never ask him, or anyone to try to do that again in a clean car, so unfortunately we have to leave it at that.

This episode is the sole reason I carry an Emergency Window Break Hammer with me in my car and work's vehicle. Adam explains it in a bit more detail on his KZbin channel, Tested, when he answered what was his scariest myth on the show. The TLDR is that the car had been owned by a smoker who chain-smoked in his car. (They cleaned out about 500 cigarette butts from the car while they were prepping it.) The residual smoke and ash everywhere made the water inside the car milky-brown and it also burned Adam's eyes when he tried to open them.

Remember, look where you want to go when driving. Look where you're going, because if you look in the water, *you could end up in the water*

The fans are always right. If you live in Florida the water is likely to have crocodiles. You should test that too, if you want to make it more realistic.

This exact scenario is why i always keep a tool in my car that can break the window and cut seatbelts, cause i am not trying to wait for the pressure to even out, im busting a window and swimming

So just to be clear, he couldn't open the door at first because the pressure from the water outside of the car was too great, and he had to wait until the whole car filled with water for the pressure to equalize? I'm studying for my permit and one of my worst fears is driving into a body of water (there are a lot of rivers and bridges where I live)

The article about the 2 hikers drowning in the state park brought me here. This is a very scary scenario where even if you are mentally prepared, you can still bite the dust. Even in this test, Adam knows he had a safety line (which would reduce his panic) but he still would've technically died.
@lass12347 жыл бұрын
2:38 I think Adam mentioned that brown water was from the previous car owner who is a heavy smoker. That nicotine water burn Adam's eyes, literally.
