Actually, it was called duck tape first. I believe it comes from ww2, where it was used to waterproof ammo cases. It was called Duck tape as a reference to it being watertight!

Think about it though. Imagine you're washed ashore, and a rescue party is looking for you WAY SOONER than you anticipated. You might not have a sign to say SAVE ME because you're too busy pissing around making a water jug out of bamboo. Water is essential of course but you can bypass the whole hunt for water if you, well, just get saved.

First there was the Dutch word "doek" meaning "fabric". Then there was a tightly-woven cotton fabric which people called "cotton duck". Then, (non-adhesive) strips of cotton duck became popular in many places where strips of fabric were needed. People started to add adhesives to tape by the 1910s, and in the 1920s and 1930s, duck tape (with adhesive) was used for medical purposes. This tape was used for sealing ammo boxes in the 1940s, which increased its popularity. After the end of World War 2, it was used to wrap air ducts. This is when people started calling it "duct tape", and it was sold with that name by various companies. In 1975, one company that produced it decided to rebrand it as "Duck tape", complete with a cartoon duck logo. It became extremely popular due to extensive marketing. The product called "Duck tape" was sold to Shurtape in 2009 and is still being sold by them today under the name "Duck Pro". On the Shurtape website you can find, for example, "PC 9S Duck Pro® by Shurtape® General Purpose Grade, Co-Extruded Cloth Duct Tape". So, by their usage, "duct tape" is the generic name, and "Duck Pro" is a brand name. Therefore, like the brand names velcro and scotch tape, duck tape is a perfectly fine name to use. Admittedly, "duck tape" is not the same as the official name "Duck Pro", but then again, the word "velcro" is also not the same as the official name, which is "VELCRO® brand hook-and-loop fastener". (And yes, the Velcro company does insist that you call it that, and they really hate it when people use the word "velcro" as a generic name. Just Google "don't say velcro". It's hilarious.) So "duck tape" is arguably a genericised trademark. But in any case, how a word is used almost never aligns with what is "technically correct", so trying to correct people isn't going to accomplish anything except causing needless arguments. The easiest way to handle it is to realise that language does not need intervention, and then to just chill out about it.
