There are a lot of misconceptions about corsets, especially corsets of the Victorian era. Most people automatically think of horrible things when they hear the word 'corset' due to all the myths floating about. I like history... and clothes.... so I made this video to help dispose of all the corset LIIIIIEEEESSS!!!!
Have fun watching!

I had someone try on a corset I made to prove it, and seeing the revelation on her face, that it is in fact very comfortable, was a very fun moment. (It wasn't really a proper corset, it was for a costume, an underbust from an internet pattern with flimsy bones that I cut from a plastic sheet, but my point still stands)

"Women in factories wore them" like yeah that doesn't mean ot was good for them, it was part of what they were expected to wear. Its almost like back then people hated women, it really astounds me that people seem unable to grasp this concept that throughput history women have been hated and oppressed and forced to follow unhealthy fashion. You think people cared maybe it was harder for horseback riding ladies to ride properly while wearing a corset? No!! Think why were only Lady riders expected to wear corsets while riding and doing a sport and not men, if corsets really were good and okay for you and even beneficial. To be fair, in the movie they made it clear the one Elizabeth had at the beginning was brand new which her father had shipped in as a surprise for the occasion so it likely wasn't even in her size. Actually, cavemen were very skilled surgeons. They would bore holes into their skulls (in a process called Trepanning) to remove evil spirits. The first known trepanned skull was from about 8,500 years ago. And most of the time the patient would survive having a massive hole in their skull and even make a full recovery (well as much of a full recovery as is possible with a hole in your head). This is also the first known surgical procedure in recorded history. To this day trepanned skull make up about 10% of all skulls found from the Neolithic age.

Also, not all European women wore corsets even though one hears that all the time. Women in the Nordics or Eastern Europe were mostly still wearing their traditional folk outfits. Even though more research is needed, most Finnish costumers think that even society ladies donned their corsets on special occasions only. That makes sense as the corsets were expensive imports or specially tailored products. In any case, regular women didn’t have money to spend on such frivolities. I’ve seen photos of even servants of a big manor house in the late 19th century where the women didn’t wear any kind of bust support.

I also think the most likely reason they "went out of fashion" is because of the 1st world war, where you donated all the metal you had, so you could have it processed into bullets. (hench why the fashion right after is all just loose tubes). Since corsetry did use quite a bit of wires, as well as bustles etc. They just didn't come into stile afterwards, as we soon went into the 2nd world war, and at that point very few people were alive (if any) who had grown up wearing them. The whole "fashion" changed more into men's wear, pants, masculine etc.

They DID actually wear corsets that shift organs, even if you're not tightlacing, it's just the organs go right back to their natural positions after you take the corset off for the night, which everyone did. It isn't a problem to have your organs moved a little so long as you give your body a break, and this is one of the reasons I suspect it's recommended to slowly get your body used to tightlacing if you want to do that safely: it needs to adjust to more dramatically shifting organs.

Yes!! Corsets back in the Victorian era we’re made of baleen for the boning, this material can first be stiff, but then softens and becomes flexible with heat and moisture. There are also corsets made for more of a active lifestyle, since doing sports and just cycling were becoming very popular. Tight-lacing was also the wearers choice, much like a shoe! You choose to be in pain and to be uncomfortable for fashion (like high-heels), but you can also choose to be comfortable and loose to do day-to-day activities (like a normal shoe). I currently wear an underbust corset as a back brace but the best part about it is that while it supports my wonky back, I get some amazing curves as a result of how it's cut/patterned. I purchased it from orchard corset. I'm currently looking into getting an overbust corset for not just better back support but also for bust support which in turn will provide additional back support. The one I'm looking at getting is also from orchard corset.

I take a Fashion design class, we are in our Fashion History unit and my teacher literally told us all of these stereotypes about corsets and rib removing during the Victorian Era. I was dying the whole class period, I don’t insert where this misinformation about corsets came from. :(

This is a great and entertaining video!!! Thank you for dispelling these myths. I'm wearing my corset now and it's super comfy. 😊😊 Let's not forget the Victorian ladies hiking and climbing up hills and exploring nature and national parks. I'm with you. I'm really sick of Hollywood trying to sneak in a tight lacing corset scene into every period drama. Irrrrrritating!!

Another reason women fainted was, well...actually, this one doesn't even involve fainting so much as pretending to faint. Forewarning, NSFW. At some point during this era, doctors believed that stimulating an *rg*sm was a legitimate way to wake a woman after she fainted. So, many women, particularly upper class women, would "faint" so they could be brought into a special room to be "treated."

Thank you! I also get peeved every time a book has a girl in that era complain about wearing a corset. Legit every time they complain about how bad it is and then for the rest of the book don't even mention it. It's not necessary to say, adds nothing to the plot, and is basically a forgotten one liner that's completely false lol.

I wear an Amazon corset, and when I bought it it fit me like a paper towel roll. So I put it on a dress form that was expanded to my measurements for two days, and the boning bent into a much more comfortable and flattering shape. Amazon corsets are fine, but you need to put in some effort to make them work for you.

Whoever said that women aren't humorous needs to watch this gal. Excellent humor. For the topic at hand though, I always knew there was something off with the popular ideas of them. Like how could people who would supposedly faint from seeing blood or a spider at the same time be fully willing to undergo surgery in a time before neither anesthetics nor penicillin existed just for the sake of somehow looking better? I know women can think quite differently to men, but surely if that was true, we'd not associate women as fragile and needing protection, but as HARDCORSE warriors of frankly biblical proportions, and nobody would take beauty as a vanity if so many women were willing to go such lengths.

I’m a transgirl and I wear a corset every day to help with posture and because they’re super comfy. It really just feels like you’re being hugged a little. The tightest I could possibly get my corset with all of my boyfriend’s strength (6’5 gym type) would still not restrict my breathing enough to make me feint.

That’s why you don’t wear them tight. Again, tight lacing corsets wasn’t that common in the Victorian era. And I personally don’t tight lace my corset, ideally a corset should give you a nice snug/ sturdy feeling and some back and bust support.

"why would they continue to do something that made them pass out? Pretty stupid." ...Didn't the victorian era lace makeup with uranium? And beer? And almost any other thing they possibly could have put it on? And didn't they use literal morphine to "calm" their children down? And put cocaine in soda and cough medicine.... etc... Basically, the victorian era was stupid.

I feel like people kept thinking about the cartoons made with Victorian ladies involved, the ones where all the shapes and sizes were exaggerated. That, and did not corset usage only stop due to the war, they needed the materials in corsets for other equipment in military usage.
