Shieldmaidens it's important to understand the very few Viking remains of women buried with weapons , don't show any signs of ever have been in battle, and no sign of having used weapons , Children have also been found burid with weapons so it seem to be more about status , we simply have no proof of women in battle, also only men could enter Valhalla and only if they died in battle, that does not fit well with the idea of women in battle

They did were helmets with horns. Mainly the chieftains to identify them from the regular warriors. There are runes and rock art that do portrait Vikings with helmet with horns.

Vikings did wear horned helmets during certain ceremonies and we do have evidence. They probably didn't wear them in battle.

@@MythicalArcana google "the Viksø helmets" and you will see the helmets, but they are from the bronze age, not the viking era. Northman showed it used in a ceremony though. May be other sources of info. I do not believe they used them in the viking age myself.

no they didn't call themselves Norsemen!!!!!, Swedes and Danes may have used terms like that for Norwegians as they are the ones living in the North of Scandinavia , Vikings didn't have an umbrella term for all Scandinavians they didn't see themselves as one big culture, there were many tribes, they may have called themselves by the tribe name or Chieftan , in England people tended to call them Danes because most of the Vikings who raided and settled England was Danes so they confused them all as Danes, central Europe tended to call them Norsemen or Normans (that is why Normandy and the population there got their name ) in the east Viking were known as Rus or Verangians , there were also Geats and Sveir (in Scandinavian Sweden is called Sverige =realm of the Sveir) in Denmark the population is still called Danes,(Danmark(Danish)=borderland of the Danes) in Norway the population is called Norsk/Nordmænd/Normann in Scandinavian , so when people call them "Norse" for us in Scandinavia it sounds like Norwegians (Norsk) , nobody know for sure what the term Viking (Vikingr/Vikingar(plural) meant for the Vikings it may have come from the old Norse "Vik" meaning Bay/Inland where the Vikings settled so "people living in/settling in Bays" there is also a huge area in Scandinavia called "Viken" , in another time I think it was in the Roman Empire a similar word "Wicing" meant pirate, the same word in another place meant "warrior" and yet another similar word meant "seafarer" anyway we don't know if "Vikingr" comes from "Wicing" the same word can also change meaning over time , we have Runestones where the word is use as "he was a great Vikingr" and one where the local Scandinavians complain about "Vikingar" (plural) from another Scandinavian country , in the Icelandic Sagas the word is used I think 7 times in different ways most people only know the "going Vikingr" so they believe they understand the term when they then hook it up with "Wicing" from another language
