For that she started to wear armor and helmet at all times. When Achilles defeated her, the cursed was not lifted and when the hero took the helmet away, he fell victim of the curse. That’s actually a really terrifying curse. Especially for a woman. It effectively translates to “every man on earth will now instantly try to rape you”. She could break the ranks of an entire army just by taking off the helmet. This should be a movie.

Back when Wonder Woman got her first big reboot in the 80's (post Crisis on Infinite Earths, I believe), the amazons of Themyscira were born from the souls of women who died at the hands of men. This was done so that the remaining few Greek gods could retain some power by being worshiped by a select few. Not sure for how many years this remained the case until another reboot of them in the New 52 made them closer to actual amazons in the sense that they'd reproduce by sleeping with men...and then killing them afterward. They'd also trade away the male infants to Hephaestus in exchange for armor and weapons. Those men born from amazons worked in the god's foundries, as well. Brian Azzarello's run on New 52 Wonder Woman is like a parody of ancient Greek tales, for better or worse.

I had a theory that the Amazons may have been an artistic interpretation of what Sparta would have become if the Spartan men were killed off. There are three reasons why Spartan women fit the description of the Amazons quite well. First, though they never formally served in the Spartan Army, (as far as we know) Spartan women were trained to fight. The reason for this was that if the Spartan Army were ever destroyed, they would serve as the last line of defense. Second, in addition to learning how to fight, they often engaged in many forms of athletics such as gymnastics as part of their education. This made them physically fit which in turn made them by ancient standards (and possibly even modern standards) drop dead gorgeous. Sparta has actually been refereed to as "The Land of Beautiful Women." Third, like the rest of Spartan society, they were conditioned from infancy to believe that all non-Spartans were little better than animals. For this reason, if the Spartan men were killed off, Sparta would have become a nation ruled by beautiful warrior women who sincerely believed that the only men in the world who were worth anything were all dead.

I'm wondering if anyone can clarify this. The searing off the breast thing apparently was apparently not accepted at the time. From what I heard, the name for the Amazons was not actually Greek in origin, but sounded similar to "without breasts" in their language. No depiction of the Amazons in artwork show them with only one breast, even thought their weapons and armor changed with the times. It could just be someone's explanation for the name, or it could be meant as an insult, as they would not have been considered "real women" because they acted like men in the Greek mindset.

They adapt like any other brave human being would in a dangerous situation. I have a great respect for the other part of the human species. There're *real* cultures where women warriors were not only a known thing, but *desired* ; ancient Greece had Spartan women, Sarmatians and Scythians likely had warrior women who were basically the Amazons, Viking Age Scandinavia had the Skjoldmaer (shieldmaidens), and Japan had the Onna-Musha (women warriors), and even the Onna-Bugeisha (women *samurai* ). There might even be *others* I don't know about; if anyone knows, please feel free to tell me. All that to say, the idea of the Amazons is one of the more *probable* Greek stories; Sarmatia and Scythia could *very well* have been organized in such a way that the men and women lived in separate tribes while still being part of the same country.

I doubt there is any truth in the legends that they remove their breast for shooting with a bow. Ive done some archery as hobby and a breast would not be in the way. Just watch some archery or try it for yourself and see. Or check some green arrow on YT. You see my point that for the posture holding for shooting a breast would not be in the way
