Just prefacing this by apologizing for providing an overly long criticism/opinion that was in no way asked for. This is a very interesting case I think, because despite understanding and to an extent agreeing with magic square taking most of the points. I still think it’s the worse figure. The transformation is an entire third of the figure, in addition to the robot and alt modes. Each part plays into each other when the figure comes into play. And so I think ultimately the problem lies in the scoring system. Specifically in that each section is given equal weight. On paper giving every part equal weight is good but, a figure technically looking better, having more accessories, and a slightly wider range of articulation means nothing if it feels like crap to handle, and the transformation feels like crap as well. Maybe that’s just down to my personal sensibilities, but I feel like transformation, and the materials and build quality should be weighted higher than appearance and articulation, especially if either of those two things are affected by the materials and the transformation. Alternatively a transformation can also be fun enough to make up for a lackluster robot mode or slightly sub par materials (specifically have Cybertron Deluxe Thundercracker in mind when I say this). Basically each of these qualities is influenced by others and isolating them all and providing the equal weight when some have more influence on the overall quality of the figure than others, (transformation and material/build quality over the figure looking clean in both modes and the range of articulation. Although there is obviously a point where either of those two can become too compromised and the transformation is at fault for that.) TLDR: I think the outcome of this comparison shows the flaws of this system in how isolating each aspect of a figure like this instead of considering how the factors influence each other can lead to really weird outcomes.
@g.b.f98594 жыл бұрын
I had to go back and check, because I did not remember you mentioning price in the past, though you did. Feels kind of surprising to me given your stance on compromising based on price to even include it as a point giving category. I do disagree with some of this, though I am admittedly biased to Newage, I expected MS to win on presentation as a bot and then some, though I disagree with alt mode since it doesn't even look like all the parts are holding together in place. Such as below the hammer on the back of the pistol. I also feel like the thicker grip on the pistol is off putting on the various figures that do that.
@domd82904 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the feet sticking out in alt mode. Not sure how MS got the point there.
@aaronthweatt42804 жыл бұрын
The sweatpants metaphor doesn’t quite work, because in that scenario you have a better alternative 4th option that is immediately accessible. In the Blast-Off scenario, if you want something reminiscent of the cartoon you do not... there is no “something else.” It is still a great question: Should we buy something that we know in our hearts is far from perfect just to check the box on our shelves? I don’t have the willpower to do that, but kudos to anyone that does. I’m sure Fanstoys will have the “perfect-looking” Blast Off by 2027... but it will have single-jointed elbows and a weirdly inaccessible waist swivel 😀.
@zilvertron4 жыл бұрын
What he meant was that you are not forced to buy anything, dont buy it just for a placeholder lasting maybe less than a year if you dont end up liking it. And if its just "the best at the moment" just play the waiting game and its bound to come up with something thats even better later on, leaving you open to spend your money on stuff thats more urgent to your tastes. To me that Blastoff had its flaws, but hes a character i dont really care that much for that i absolutely must have a perfect version of him, since it most likely gonna stay in combined mode a long time. To me personally i most likely will remove Swindle and play around with him and put it back in leg mode when im done, so to me it matters what his alt mode is and in the end what combiner team I end up buying. For others they might have a different favorite Combaticon that they need to have as perfect as possible, but if no such version exists yet, just be patient, dont settle for "good enough"
@jonathanbrown9434 жыл бұрын
The hip joints on MS Megs are meant to be pushed up more so that they don’t stick out like that. You missed a step when transforming back to robot. Edit: that’s also why he seemed shorter during the review, because the hips were correct then.

So I have a couple thoughts/suggestions I would like to leave you with. 1. Paint - I think giving something credit for being painted is not a good approach. Look at the head sculpt photos. Newage looks like booger paint and ruins the head sculpt. Look at the torso and pelvis area. The booger paint is back and makes the Newage look gooey and less crisp. If you are going to give credit for paint, I would take in to account cleanliness of application, and you should consider in the judgement, was paint needed or did the sculpt pull it off well enough to not need paint and allow for a better more crisp sculpted figure. 2. If you have to break the scultp to get a pose, Newage thighs moving forward for that kick, then that cant be in their favor. Newage not being able to pull off the full montey should have put the point to Magic Square. 3. Build materials - you go back to build materials being bad for Magic Square figures. There needs to be a better way to measure than then just touching them and saying it feels bad. Can it be measured by how many peices pop off during transformation or how floppy joints are or breakage? And if none happen, can they just be different but comparable? I have seen videos of someone stomping on a Magic Square Prime and nothing breaks. I haven't seen anyone do that to a New Age figure yet. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I love what you are doing and your perspective matters to me and I enjoy the content very much. Keep up the good work my dude.

I mean, all of Skullface's reviews are going to be his tastes and collector bias. All the points you mentioned, particularly paint, he's brought up before. In this video he literally gave MS the point over NA's limited Hip joint (what you called Thigh). He's mentioned loose pieces and joints in previous MS releases. I have both MS and NA figures, there's definitely a difference in the feel.
@cybertronianexchange5954 жыл бұрын
@@hw7738 Right, I am not saying he hasnt, but he didn't in this one and I dont recall when he has, just calling what I saw and made a suggestion. Giving the point to the hip or thigh to MS I must not have saw that correctly, I only watched it once and happily retract that statement if it is as you say. I too have both NA and MS and yes, I can tell a difference in touch, but it doesnt make one better than the other was my point. It may feel better, but is it? I would say material being better comes from the transformation and play and how it holds up. Stress marks, cracks, breakage, loose joints, parts popping off. All could be factors in material (as well as engineering in sigular cases rather than mirrored joints). I have both of these Megatrons and I will say that MS is sloppy out of the box in regards to mold cleanup. I didn't notice some flashing on my copy and cracked a hip skirt hing. I like Bobby's perspective on Transformers and really only watch his videos because of it. I don't expect to agree all the time and I certainly wasn't beating him up for it. I just noticed some things that didn't add up as logical conclusions and wanted to make a friendly suggestion. Take it or leave it, no hurt feelings either way.

There are a couple of things I don't get about your scale chart, I'm sure you're doing your best with what you're given but still I need to ask!!! MS released an Optimus figure first so to be in the right scale this new Megatron should be at the same size as their Optimus and it isn't, it's bigger. MS Megatron is bigger then NA Megatron and on the images you showed relating the scale chart the NA Megatron had his head over the line and the MS one had his head on the line. If MS is bigger how can his head be on the line and the NA be higher?!!! That means you're using two different scale charts, that could make sense if one was the MS scale chart and the other was the NA scale chart but since MS Megatron is bigger then their take on Optimus, Megatron's head should be higher then the line on the MS scale chart so you're not using a MS scale chart and a NA scale chart. Why are you using two different scale charts and which scale charts are those?!!! NA never released another figure that should have the same size has Megatron so it's closer to the right size then MS who released another character that should be the exact same size and isn't. MS completely fails on the scale department, if there is one thing where NA wins every time besides the materials and paint is the scale, at least according to the Sunbow scale chart. MS is all over the place with their scale, first they where following the DX9 scale, like with their take on Blaster which was the same size as the DX9 Soundwave, then they started a different scale with their car bots, another with their trucks and yet another with their minibots, only two of those where in scale with each other and in scale with their Optimus (I don't even know which was which any longer). Now they released a new Soundwave and a new Megatron that are barely in the same scale with each other (Soundwave is to big) and both these two are not in scale with their Optimus, they may be in scale with one of the other 4 different scales they have been releasing but not with Optimus. The only thing where the scale of MS is better is mimicking the absolute disaster the original cartoon scale was. Is it me, am I missing something important relating the TF scale?!!! Please don't tell me that the original scale was all over the place because almost every one agrees that the Sunbow chart is the one we should follow. I would like all companies to respect the same scale and scale chart but at lest I would want them to respect their own scale chart, there can be exceptions ofc otherwise we would never get characters like Unicron or Metroplex but all the other characters should be on the right scale. Maybe your MS scale chart reflects the MS scale chart mess and that is why according to some figures what you showed us may actually be right but even so NA should have won the scale since in the overall they are following the same scale and scale chart. Thanks for the comparison Mr. Skullface and sorry for my outburst, even though it may come across as directed to you it wasn't, it was directed to MS. I like theirs figures and I'm not bothered by their material and lack of finish paint wise (in fact I even like their figures matte look) but I hate the fact that their scale is all over the place, to some one like me, to whom the scale is important, I have a hard time displaying their figures with the rest of my Legends collection and even within their own releases. I know I can stop buying MS figures altogether but I believe as a collector and as a MS client I'm entitled to express my opinion and try to push them into what I think is the right path. I've been trusting them to respect their own scale chart and prior to having the figures in hand I don't know if their going to do that or not (I can wait for reviews or comparisons like yours, they are a big help to the community but if I wait too much the prices tend to go up and I already spend too much money as it is) so it ends up not being fair for me as a buyer. Again thank you Mr. Skullface you know I love and follow your work.

For Scale, I'm confused that it shows 2 completely different results against the same line chart. The perspective of the shot changes things dramatically. It does show that MS stands almost a full head above NewAge. Because of the different shots of the line chart comparison, it's a shame you didn't have a MS Prime to compare these 2 against. I actually have the Newage megatron and MS prime and they stand almost perfectly at the same height; megatron stands maybe millimeter higher. This would mean that the MS Megatron would too tall and too wide against their own MS prime. Watching them side by side I would almost agree that the MS megatron looks better. However on it's own, Newage megatron looks more correct. What matters at the end of the day, though, is how well they look against the prime in your collection. For me, NewAge is much better to have with the MS Prime. I really wanted 1 line to complete my legends and although MS, i think, does the best sculpt; their scale is too much messed up against their own products.
