A useful shortcut to delete a path between two nodes, is: Ctrl + Click on the segment. (Alt + Click straightens the path)

Apologies for replying so late, but grouping keeps the elements separate, so you can ungroup them later if needed. Adding elements together combines them into a single element, which cannot be ungrouped again without using Undo or breaking apart the elements manually. Which one you use at any given time is really up to you and what you're creating. I hope this helps!
