The sapless branch, ingrafted into the living vine, becomes a part of the vine. It lives while united to the vine. Jesus is speaking of the fruitless Christian, the professing believer, who, because he does not comply with the conditions of discipleship, departs more and more from Christ. He does not in his life bear the fruits of righteousness; he does not copy the life of Christ. But the true follower of Christ can have no lower standard than His perfect life. Let us strive to be a true branch of the living vine."
