groundschoolaca... VOR Navigation is one of those things that is difficult to teach. In this video I've broken it down to manageable pieces to help you better understand VOR navigation

I am a new member of the school and. The reason i joined is because i liked a lot the videos i saw in UTUBE. And I have to say, the videos that are posted in utube , yes it showes the school is great, but to be honest, I think the actual classes are a thousand times better. Is incredible the suppport you get from the school , the you ask them a question and in less than nothing you get an answer. Honestly, the best online school ever!!!!!!!

Very nice. Agree with some of the comments below regarding terminology. Radials "radiate" outward. The 090 radial starts on the East side of the station and "radiates" outward. You can say, "Intercept the 090 radial and track inbound." But you cant do that if you are anywhere on the West side of the station. The verbiage should be, "Intercept the 270 radial and track inbound." Or...."Intercept the 090 course and track inbound."

When the examiner asked me to dial in a VOR and fly to it, I did so without comparing each Morse Code character with the sectional. On the ground, the examiner criticized me for not verifying the VOR. I told him that I DID verify the VOR. I told him that I'm an amateur radio operator and I know Morse Code. He smiled. In retrospect, I should have repeated the letters I was hearing out loud, but it was so natural to me to be reading the code that I didn't think of it. So, if you know Morse Code and don't need to compare the dits and dahs with the sectional to verify a VOR, say something. As an aside, one of my pleasures was flying to smaller towns using their local AM broadcast station as an NDB and using a technique taught to me by a lady instructor who once ferried aircraft in WWII that allowed me to track straight to an NDB in a crosswind. I wonder if really practical techniques like that are taught in this online ground school class.

Danm I want to memorize Morse code now!!!
@mrdonsmith3 жыл бұрын
Learning Morse Code is pretty easy. However, some people fear it for reasons I can't understand. If I were teaching it, I would start out with a dit. That's an E. Then di-dit (two dits), that's an I (eye), then di-di-dit. That's an S. Have someone send a mix of those three letters for a few minutes and you'll reach a point where you just know each character and you don't have to think about it. A dah (dash) is a T. Da-dah is an M. Da-da-dah, is O (oh). Now, you know how to send S-O-S, don't you? I once had a Cub Scout troop over to show them amateur radio. My daughter, who was about 12 at the time, was watching me demo Morse Code. After the demo, I had to run an errand. When I came back about two hours later, Deanna, my daughter, could send any letter of the alphabet in Morse Code! Slowly, but she did it. One final easy lesson: Numbers are sent is a pattern of five characters. 'One' is one dit followed by four dah's. 'Two' is two dit's followed by three dah's. Get it? 'Five' is five dit's. Six through Zero reverses the pattern; 6 is one dah followed by four dit's. 7 is two dah's followed by three dit's. You get it. What's zero? Yeah, you got it.
@@lyingcat9022 No clue as to di-di-dah-di-dah unless you mean a Clear/Begin but that's usually signified by di-di-di-dah repeated three times. Then 'What / hath / god / wrouq. Then you should have added di-di-dah-dah-di-dit (the 't' in 'dit' is only added to a 'di' at the end). Don, KK5DON.

So forgive me if this sounds stupid as I have not yet started ground school myself, but was it truly necessary to fly due north on heading 360? Why couldn't you for example fly heading 020 or 030 to gradually intercept 090 and then change heading again accordingly? (obviously excluding radar vectors here).

Dictionary definition of a Radii (origin of Radial): "A straight line extending from the centre of a circle." in the case of a VOR it has 360 radii. It would be clearer to use bearing to and radial from. If you're on a 050 bearing TO a VOR, you are located on the 230 radial FROM the VOR. This provides clarity in definition, the same way you only use the word "takeoff" if its in a "takeoff clearance" otherwise its departure. If you say you're on the 050 radial "but is it to or from" you are increasing the potential for error by 50%, this may be why such a high % of students make errors on this during check rides. In this example; you are located on a 050 BEARING to the VOR on a heading of 070. What heading do you require to intercept the 090 RADIAL? And where are you in relation to the VOR? Answer: 050 bearing TO must be 230 Radial FROM..., you can only be SW of the VOR. Do not use the definition TO and FROM in relation to your VOR positioning, only use it in reference to your aircraft instrumentation.

Thanks. Thought this was a good video. I agree the top view with the instruments view is very good for understanding the geometry. Might consider limiting discussion about bearing vs. course (i.e. bearing is always the radial and course determines the TO/FROM)

06:20 It's not a 050 degree radial to the station. You are flying the 230 radial inbound, which happens to be a 050 degree magnetic course.... but it's not the 050 degree radial... it's the 230 radial TO the station. You are still on the 230 degree radial. It doesn't care what direction your are flying. So the takeaway is in order to fly the 230 degree radial TO the station, just dial your OBS with 230 on the BOTTOM with a TO indication, which means 050 will be on top. Inbound = (230 degree Radial on the) Bottom =TO indication. You are making this more difficult than it actually is.... This is a great VOR learning tool tho! Thanks for sharing.
@DownTheRabbit-Hole5 жыл бұрын
If a flight examiner told me to intercept the 90 radial "to" the station, I would have to fly east of station and intercept the 90 radial with eventual heading of 270. Terminology is key. There is no 90 radial west of the station.
@xaviss_jm74292 жыл бұрын
Are Inbound radials at the bottom of the VOR panel? So, in the example his flying R-270 Ib Hdg 090
@DownTheRabbit-Hole2 жыл бұрын
@@xaviss_jm7429 Yes. The pilot is flying correctly. It is just the terminolgy I was addressing. ATC only speaks in terms of radials inbound or outbound and headings. They have no top or bottom , to or from, of VOR etc. So I think it is better to copy their terminolgy. This is a bit nuanced. They would say track 270 radial inbound, not 90 radial "to". They are not concerned with your VOR settings/indications. The authors vor terminology technique would only confuse a newbie, IMO In other words, if you repeated back 90 "to" VOR when they said track 270 radial inbound, even tho they are identical, somebody would get confused. No offense, just my opinion. Inbound radials bottom vor, outbound top vor.

@peterpickguitar Just curious. Not sure what avionics you are using, but if OBS lines are magenta then you are still in GPS mode and using the OBS function. This is different than VOR nav with green lines. They are very similar, and can be used interchangeably usually, but one is dialed into VOR frequency (green line) and other is using GPS coordinates to approximate VOR location. An FAA flight examiner will ask for true green line VOR nav usually.

Shouldn't to indication zone be 180 degree zone of aircraft side?, i mean with reference to imaginary perpendicular line from the aircraft to VOR station in the center? Why do i feel like the purple and green zone, which shows bearing-to and radial-from ranges be opposite? Help please? :) at 6:45
@christopherhadsell90495 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering, because you don't have the blue and green map, you only have the VOR indicator (and heading indicator). Seems like you make a guess (needle is left or right) and then you go accordingly until you get the movement, no green/blue map, unless you're using the GPS. I have to still learn about the GPS.

the way i understand it is you track the inbound 090 bearing to the station on the 270 radial. Once over the station on the same course you would then be flying bearing 090 on the 090 radial.
