Néa Mákri & Rafina - Greece

If you do not want to stay in Athens, Nea Makri is a good alternative.
It is a mondaine touristy little coastal village about 35 minutes by car from Athens and even closer to the international airport.
Rafina lies a bit south of Nea Makri.
It has a port with small fish restaurants serving tasty food.
From Rafina the ferries leave for the Greek islands.

I lived here as a child when my Father was stationed at the U.S. Naval Communication Station that is now closed. The Greek community was so warm and welcoming to service members and I have extremely fond memories of our time there. I would love to one day return for a visit.
