Juan, you really 'lit a fire' with many of us when you started covering the Oroville Dam situation. I am 64 years old and have always considered myself an Adventurer, but my experiences pale in comparison to yours. I grew up on a family farm in Eastern Washington, but my Dad took me to Europe (on the Cheap!) when I was 10, so the farm was just one little corner of my life. I took flying lessons in high school, rode a motorcycle to L A (seeking fame and fortune) three days after graduation, joined the Navy and became an electrician on a Guided Missile Destroyer. I have 80 hours logged in a Quicksilver MX ultralight, have made a solo coast-to-coast motorcycle trip and now live on a boat in Los Angeles harbor. I have been riding a horse bareback for 13 years, here in Los Angeles. Next time you fly out of LAX and "happen" to make a couple of hard lefts, you can first look down and spot my horse up at Palos Verdes, and a minute or two later can look down and see me waving from the boat! But, again, YOU are someone an old Adventurous guy like me can really look up to! A rural upbringing and then LOTS of travel will certainly make for a fully-rounded Life, don't ya know? Ha, ha, as if you don't get it... I come up to your neck of the woods, every year now, to be a Volunteer at the Tevis Cup. August 5, I will be up at Red Star Ridge off Soda Springs road, handing cups of cold water to the Adventurous folks riding their horses 100 miles in 24 hours or less, from Tahoe to Auburn. Please mark your calendar and bring the family to Foresthill on the afternoon of the 5th. Bring the lawn chairs and let the kids hang out on Bath Road to watch the horses and riders meet their crews at the 70-mile point of the ride. You are teaching your kids well, and this is just one more notch in the stick that will help them see the World from a whole different angle. Growing old successfully sometimes mean "don't ever slow down"! Look up info on a guy named Potato Richardson, one of your local Heroic Characters (Placerville, I think). Potato won Tevis two years ago at 70-some-odd years of age! Come to Foresthill, please, on August 5 and bring that GoPro camera! In the meantime, stay safe, stay Adventurous and Don't Go Changing!

Boy, does this bring back memories!! I grew up in Seattle, but my mom and dad's families were all in the Auburn-Sacramento-Stockton area so we traveled down several times a year (before I-5 was built) and Dunsmuir was one of our favorite camping areas. The old highway 99 followed the river and was crooked as a dog's hind leg. Those were the day's (1950's) when you could just pull off the highway and camp. Great times! Love your videos and your family!! Great job Juan!

Thank you for the reminder of when my family would take trips like this. My dad was always stopping at these little hole-in-the-wall spots. I lived in NJ until I was twelve. We were in central Jersey, Middlesex county, about an hour or so from NYC. I have seen caverns and waterfalls in many states; places like Rushmore and Crater Lake, and countless Mom and Pop tourist traps and museums big and small in 46 of the lower 48. I have, however, never been to the Empire State building, Statue of Liberty. Seems my father wanted me to see the great outdoors and the history from the "right in front of you" perspective. You seem to be showing your kids there is more to life than video games and TV too. Great job. Thank you, thank you for taking us along and sharing. Thank you too for keeping us informed of the dam's progress. I'm better informed than my sister and she lives near Sutters Mill. But right now I wish to thank you for reminding me of my father. I lost him in January.

I've lived in the mountains of Western North Carolina all of my life. Every year we have at least 5 people die falling off of water falls. Just last week a person died falling from one. The best place to view a waterfall is from the bottom. Please keep this in mind. The top of waterfalls are not a place to be. Usually covered with slick wet moss covered rocks. The bottom of the falls folks. Please.

Yes, I'm envious Juan. You have such amazing scenery and places to visit relatively close to home. I should be a member of the flat earth club where I live, no big hills, and apart from some small remnants of a once great ancient forest and a couple of Napoleonic War forts there's nothing much to see round here. Many thanks to you and your charming family for sharing your leisure time with us all.

Juan and family, thanks for the beauty again, feel relaxed just watching, I could almost breath those negative ions, You all should try the Union Creek area in Southern Oregon. I think your family would really enjoy camping there.
@briangarrow4487 жыл бұрын
Been in the area a few times. The little cabins are the best of old school Americana. I still try to seek out the old motor lodges and family owned resorts. Took my honeymoon many years ago and traveled across the Northern Rockies all the way north to Banff and Jasper. My only mistake was not checking the weather report in Jasper- tent camping and we woke up to 6 inches of snow, on the week after Independence Day. Still, it was an adventure and we were young and in love. And thanks for the link to the PBS Grand Coulee Dam video. Much appreciated!
@annaksfrog7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the chuckle! One of the first things my Canadian husband taught me when I moved North is "ALWAYS TAKE YOUR BOOTS TO JASPER." We've also bathed in a lake at the hot sand dunes in sunny April. Now living 4 hours N of Jasper, that route is the quickest (and most beautiful) drive to see family in the Seattle area every year. We also camped on our honeymoon -- Mt St Helens.

EASTERN WOODS - Savin' 'em for the outhouse! Now, there's something that would surprise a lot of people. Also, to TONY MACDONALD - don't knock the phone book. I am a voracious reader - will read anything with words on it. Yes, even the phone book! One evening, for want of anything better to do, I grabbed the phone book and dove right in. A few minutes later, I was shrieking with laughter. My husband wanted to know what was so funny.... THERE REALLY IS SOMEONE NAMED SCHMUCK!!!

It's surprising how much that trail and waterfall reminded me of some areas along the Blue Ridge parkway in Virginia, even though the underlying rock structure is totally different. Brings back some pleasant memories.
@chrisregpick7 жыл бұрын
Great guitar music. That is a really cool and unique waterfall. The Cave makes it really unique. I believe that is Basalt Columns, The cooling down process takes hundreds of years and creates gas exhaust patterns on this type of rock. Very common in Washington and West Coast. " It is the nature of basaltic lava cooling that allows this to happen: this lava is hotter and moves faster than other kinds. As it cools from the bottom up and from the center outward, long fractures form columns that at times take on astoundingly clear-cut hexagons. The whole process is called columnar jointing." Wiki

That is basalt. That water is flowing over basalt columns that formed from a very liquidy, and apparently deep lava flow. You see those all over Western Washington where they erupted from volcanic fissures near the Washington-Idaho border around 17 million years ago.
