I’m a Lakota, who as a little child, was adopted and raised by a Hawaiian, I have ancestors who were massacred at Wounded Knee. The Maori people came to the Wounded Knee burial and memorial site and honored my people. This is very touching for me being a hanai Hawaiian Lakota, because I understand how vital this is to my Hawaiian people, I only wish that this was happening more for the Lakota and other Indigenous people. For so many years certain people have been profiting from our sacred and culturally significant items. Instead of recognizing the fact that these things should be returned to their rightful places, they continue to this day, to possess these things.

I am a kanaka maoli living in Aotearoa, and the first time I saw this cloak in Te Papa, I was shocked and told my husband, "Why is this here?" I couldn't believe it. I didn't know. I didn't expect to see this. And then years later when it was repatriated, I was so thankful and proud that Aotearoa did the "pono" thing, did the thing that will be remembered and appreciated. Did the thing that is exemplary and I appreciate this kindness and thoughtfulness. I think everything worked out and I'm happy that it was here in Aotearoa, as I don't think it would have made it's way back home. It's wonderful to see this perspective, because I just moved on. Great story to share.

The return of the big Island Hawaiian royal cloak and helmet is very much symbolic of the Polynesian spirit of aloha which has made the people loved and respected around the world. I have lived amongst the Maori of the Cook Islands and have spent many years visiting and living in Molokai , The Big Island, Maui , and Oahu and look forward to going back to Lanai and Kauai in the near future. The culture, costumes, lifestyle and languages are a true natural treasure which is shared with the world. Once you have been welcomed into a Polynesian family, the spirit of aloha is gifted metaphysically and you become an awakened being of the universe.Mahalo and this video clip is much appreciated.

There is 2 Royal cloaks in Bishop Museum. I Cloak is Kalaniopuu’s n the other cloak is Kamehameha’s. Kamehameha was never a King--He ambushed Kalaniopuu’s son n made himself King. Kalaniopuu was already dead!

Thank you to all my ohana in NZ for this show of respect between people. To me all Polynesian people are ohana bc we share common ancestry and bloodlines. To my knowledge I have ohana not just from my father who was Hawaiian, but uncles and aunties and grandparents from Samoa and Tonga. I have a deep love and respect for all people on this planet, but my Polynesian ohana will always hold a special place in my heart. Aloha from Cali and much love

At the time of writing this comment, it’s on display on the back wall of the 1st floor of Hawaii Hall in the Bishop Museum and it is absolutely breathtaking. You could easily spend 3-4 hours in that amazing space and I totally encourage it if you need a low key activity (2nd floor of Hawaii Hall has more interactive stuff for kids) When they talk about how small those feathers are, they are not kidding. If it wasn’t pointed out, you would think it was made of woven fibers because they are so fine

This was a beautiful documentary! I hope that through these current moments in history all indigenous people across the globe get the reparation they all deserve! I hope that all people can find it in their hearts to welcome the diversity of cultures and to respect the lands we stand on.. we should not look at the world for what it could profit for us but what we can give back to the land so that our future can survive. The meaning of life - “to love one another, to help one another, to create one another”

In maori there is oral history that they come from hawaiki nui. In my family alone there has been oral history past down over generations of traveling to Aotearoa. Many of the things between our legends and languages are similar. The k in hawaiian is subbed for t in maori As are L’s with r’s, or okina or ʻ is subbed for k in maori. The indiginous name for iur people in hawaiʻi is kanaka maoli and if translated to maori it would be tangata maori. If you translate Hawaiki nui to hawaiian you would het Hawaiʻi nui. The god of the sea in hawaiian was kanaloa in in maori its tangaroa. Love in hawaiian is aloha as is in maori its aroha like in many other polynesian cultures share the same similarities in our word for love. Talk in hawaiian is ʻolelo and in maori its korero.

My great-great-grandfather and great-great-grandmother were Hawaiian immigrants and went to Hawaii for three years, where my great-grandfather was born! Apparently they often told their children about their time in Hawaii after returning to Japan. Suo-Oshima Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where I live, is a sister island of Kauai, Hawaii, so I went to Kauai on a school trip when I was in high school! It's a wonderful place, and the memories of my homestay there are treasured! Currently, as Yamaguchi Hometown Ambassadors, we are performing music as a brother-sister duo, spreading love throughout Japan. Recently, my sister and wife have also started learning hula dancing, and I am currently practicing hula and uploading them to KZbin every day. When I sing hula songs, I am also sending gratitude to my ancestors. Let me attach a video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYfLop53jbJrnZYsi=-hTl34OVwIPIj2CJ

All I can say is Wow! I would love to know more about the journey the cloak and helmet took from the possession of the British Navy to the hands of a private collector in Britain? This should have been on display after Captain Cook acquired it to the British Museum. It’s the only honorable place since it was a gift of the Hawaiian people. It is kind of like giving the Crown Jewels of Great Britain to the Hawaiian people.

@ 8:20 "There's (sic) different accounts that recite slightly different histories..." Indeed! This is Mehanaokalâ Hind's truncated version that misleads the viewer into thinking that after being gifted the cloak and helmet, Cook is killed and the British run off with them back to England. Cook made three trips to Hawaii. The entire history is much more complicated and involves cultural and religious practices that would horrify and confuse people today. This said, it's great that both items have been repatriated.

My genealogy research has taken me to a cross road, My Tutu Lady my Fathers Great Grandmother upon getting married had the names (Kahou and Kaawalauole ) as middle names and her last name Lum, Lum being the last name of Grandma’s 2nd husband (Grandfather). I believe my Tutu lady’s maiden name was (Kahou). The strangest thing is I believe my 2nd Uncle is Francis Lum the man who coordinated Isreal Kamakawiwaole (Forgive me if spelled wrong)funeral procession at the capital’s Iolani palace home of our royal King Kamehameha the first, I believe it was his summer home when visiting Oahu, Honolulu. I’m trying to find my place on the aina as I’m a proud Kanaka Maoli, Hawaii Kopaaina. If can please help me find my ohana which originates on Big Island “Puna” my tutu lady’s childhood origin. It's great that they offered it back considering how much was stolen from hawaii . I think that to show the world how hawaii and it's aloha spirit they shouldn't have taken back a gift . The most important thing in hawaii that nobody could ever steal from hawaii is it's aloha spirit but the younger generation have lost this feeling inside everyone has called the aloha spirit . Hawaii is the only hope for the world to feel , see and understand the aloha spirit . The ACT of 1871 in the congressional records shows proof that the United States government wasn't a government but a corporation . According to law a corporation cannot annex a nation . The reason why the United States government became a corporation was because it was bankrupt and couldn't play back loan . So they foreclose . A bankrupt government cannot annex a nation . This is also the law . The U.N. And ICC need jurisdiction but that's a lie . The federal reserve banking system and the United States incorporated government forced hawaii to help pay for another nations debt . This is fraud and racketeering . The currency of hawaii was also changed . According to the law anyone who profited from a fraud / theft must pay back everything and profits , Heir to the body law's.. Everything is hawaii is done without any jurisdiction or authority . The way i see it the federal reserve bank is connected to the IMF and global banking system and everyone , corporation , government and agencies that didn't exist at 1889 and used the global banking system was created by using stolen illegal property and fund's that belonged to hawaii . So actually hawaii owns it according to the law's which they have created . This is the reason why they will never release hawaii . If hawaii makes a deal with each nation and puts balance back by showing the world how the aloha spirit work's . This might be hawaii's only chance for justice . Things like No more war . All patents in world belongs to hawaii all technology must be released to hawaii . 2/3rd of every nations wealth must come to hawaii and their nations debt will be forgiven if they comply with theses and other rules that hawaii makes . The evil people who control all of the innocent people's misery want a new world order ! Will they will be made to pay for what they did ! Hawaii in control of the world's wealth putting peace , harmony and the spirit of aloha first would be exactly what they been wanting . They were in control of the world but not anymore ! It's a New World Order !

How does the history account for Capt. James Cook was given back in pieces? Account for the killing and the butchering?✍

like they said, historians don't agree on this subject and it's largely a mystery

there is one part of the story that says that some pieces of him were given back as our ancestors believed that because he was not of his land, parts of his body must go home. the rest of his body was buried in the same way as the chiefs while being hidden in the cover of darkness due to our knowledge that he must of been of high importance. yes, we did kill him and yes it was gruesome, however, that was the fate of all who disrespected the highest of chiefs. kalaniopu'u was no exception

@808-PFH-Kanaka-Rights you do realise historians don't agree on this topic yet here you are making your assumptions look like facts

I am from hawai'i and I understand the concepts of my Hawaiian ancestors. being that cook was haole to the islands, he did not belong here, therefore, it makes sense that our ancestors gave back parts of his bodies. which parts? that's up for debate. however what is certain was that he was buried in the same likeness of our chiefs. flesh melted from his bones then put in the sea. bones wrapped in kapa cloth and hidden to rest in a cave.@@Redeemedmed .

They want to ignore that part...I would use the word Melanated. But yeah, they've pushed most of those who were able to remain "pure" to the outskirts of the islands. These light-skinned dudes they always show nowadays for representation are usually East Asian/White dudes who are 1/4 Hawaiian AT MOST smh. It's funny cause we know good and well these light people wouldn't be able to handle that sun over there and don't NO peoples lighten up like that after a few generations...The famous singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is one of the few real representations I've seen.

Aia a pai ia ka mata, hai ia tupuna nana oe! When your face gets slapped is when you tell who your ancestors are. Commit this to memory! I learned as a Hawaiian that I don’t boast about my ancestors. If someone slanders me or my ʻohana, then I mention them. Mai hookano no!
