#Qosh_Tepe_Canal is a symbol of hope for the dry lands of Afghanistan. By supplying water from the Amu River, this canal lays the foundation for sustainable agriculture and a bright future for needy families.
This canal is the largest water supply canal in Afghanistan, which is built on the headwaters of the transboundary Amu Darya river in the Aral basin. The cost of completing and building this channel is estimated at 15 million dollars. Ghosh Tepe canal is 285 km long, 100 meters wide and 8.5 meters deep, and the water height in the canal is 6.5 meters. This canal is supposed to be completed in three phases and by 2028, and its water will pass through Khalm, Nahrshahi and Daulatabad districts of Balkh province and reach Aqcheh, Mardian and Khajah Dukoh districts of Jawzjan province, and from there it will flow to Andkhoi district of Faryab province. On the way of this big canal, several water diversion dams and irrigation systems have been considered. The capacity of Ghosh Tepe canal is stated to be 650 cubic meters per second and (it has the capacity to transfer 20 billion cubic meters of water per year).
With the completion of Ghosh Tepe Canal, 600 thousand hectares of dry land will be converted into irrigated land, and large-scale cultivation and production of products such as cotton, grapes, melons, soybeans, almonds, and pistachios is planned. In addition, the Afghan government has predicted to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture by exploiting this channel. Afghanistan has claimed that with the completion of this project, about 200,000 people will be employed directly and indirectly.
