Learn to work a chain of nålbinding (NOHL-bin-ding) in the Oslo stitch, using a blunt yarn needle (nål), some bulky wool yarn (such as Paton's Classic Roving, or Alafoss Lopi), and your thumb!
Nålbinding, or “needle binding,” is a traditional Scandinavian single-needle technique for making textiles that pre-dates knitting and crochet by thousands of years, and has been practised in several other cultures around the world. Of the many possible nålbinding stitches, the Oslo stitch is a popular one, and is great for beginners.

THANK YOU. I have been trying all these different videos and getting very frustrated! Seeing you let the loop off your thumb and making a new thumb loop makes so much more sense to me. Working off the thumb was working for a while but I think this will work better for my current project.

Honestly your tutorial is the only one that suggests this start and slipping the previous loop be for making a new stitch…my chain looks much better, so I gotta say your method wins! Thank you!

Is the finished fabric "stretchy" like knitting or "stiff" like crochet?
@theartfulacorn
@theartfulacorn 6 ай бұрын
It’s not as stretchy as knitting, and less stiff than crochet. It depends a lot on the stitch, but it all makes a lovely finished fabric!

Hey good job on the video. I would suggest however to show the backside of the project as your doing it. I can't figure out how to make it because I have no idea what's going on behind your hands.

Buenos dias, me gustaría saber dónde puedo encontrar y'aguja aquí en España o también en Europa . Que medida de hilo sirve para el trabajo? Gracias
@theartfulacorn
@theartfulacorn Жыл бұрын
Buenos Dias! Nåls, or needles, can be ordered through several vendors on Etsy if you can’t find a local maker. Search for “nalbinding needle.” Or you could try whittling your own out of a piece of wood, like a branch, or a chopstick, or a bamboo toothbrush. You’ll want to use a thick wool yarn - I like single ply wool like Alafoss Lopi, or Paton’s Classic wool roving, but you can also use plied yarn. Good luck in your search!

As I see this, this is using the thumb without letting the thumb affect the size of the loops. I t is half way between using the thumb and not using the thumb.
@theartfulacorn
@theartfulacorn 5 ай бұрын
Actually, the loop size in this example is exactly determined by my thumb size - I tension it around the base of my cuticle, and then slip it off without further adjustment. If I were to slip the loop off my thumb, and then tug on the working yarn to snug it to the needle, the thumb would only be a holder that doesn’t affect the stitch size at all (needle tensioned nålbinding). Does that make sense?

do you have to use natural fibers with this craft? i really wonna try it but im allergic to wool. Edit: Also would a normal metal yarn needle work from the craft store?
@theartfulacorn
@theartfulacorn 9 ай бұрын
You can absolutely use non-wool fibres to nålbind - just use a different method to join the lengths of yarn, such as Russian join. And metal yarn needles work great in lieu of nålbinding needles, so you can go ahead and get started!
