I saw an incredibly eye-opening documentary on the history of Haiti and Dominican Republic that showed how DR has tried to "whitewash" their entire history and deny their African (i.e. black) roots, preferring instead to claim they're descended from whites. An attitude that persists today amongst a large percentage of the so-called "Afro-Latinos".
