Really Cool detail all around! The oil depot was incredible. Thanks for the operations video

Great video. I love the scenery and structures. Regarding the hoppers. You mentioned needing to add weight. For my n scale cars I start with the NMRA recommended amount but find that a little extra is needed on some cars. Also, Micr-Trains makes a spring that goes on the point of the wheel set and then into the truck. This spring is designed to produce drag (to represent weight). I have at least one axle with this spring on all my cars and some have two. Drawback to both the spring and weight is that eventually it will reduce the number of cars one engine can pull, but that just opens the opportunity for more engines! Keep up the great work with the layout and scenery.

I hear ya about the weight or drag. I do like the idea of running some longer trains and I don't want to require 3 loco's to pull just 20 cars. I could be strategic and add weight to a couple and keep them 3 hoppers grouped together just to stop the jidders.

For your signals, take a look at wehonest like you did for you grade crossing. They've use the same IR sensors, but they have logic boards to go along with them. I haven't gotten to signals on my layout yet, but am strongly considering what We honest offers.

I think I bought a few red/green wehonest lights at a swap meet. Not sure i need a big gantry style light system or not though.

LOVE Your Videos , I caught Myself Not Watching The Train Operation but Rather Looking At Layout Details For Inspiration!! Keep Up the Good Work !! PS Is There Any Additional Piping That Hooks up the Refinery and Loading Racks or Is That Just Assumed!! Thanks Again !! Getting Order Ready Now !!!!
@nscaler4543 ай бұрын
The piping is all connected from the tanks to the loading facility. Though a couple of the wire pipes to the tanks were not put in place just yet.

Hey, great video. I have subscribed. I’m going to go back to the beginning from when you first started great slow speed on the locomotive and like someone else said the oil depot is incredible one thing, no offense, though I think that before they left, they would’ve backed down to the empties pull them out, and spotted them where they removed the full ones

Thanks for the sub. I won't lie, I am not a pro at prototypical train operations. I just have fun.

I just found your channel and I am impressed and enjoy it.😮😀 I have learned a few new techniques for things. I do want to say that I really like your videos on doing the buildings, especially the Walthers Cornerstone kits. I'm eagerly awaiting your videos for the turntable and the roundhouse.😊 A question and a request/suggestion/ idea for you. R/S/I: I've seen on some layouts some people do like a damaged derailed car lying on the side of hill/mountain, or down a ditch. I would love to see what you could do with a scene like that with your artistic skills. Q: Would you ever run a steam locomotive on your layout with possibly a small passenger train, as kind of like an excursion run?
@nscaler4543 ай бұрын
The turntable/roundhouse should be a fun and extensive project. I think adding "junk" to a layout greatly increases realism. Not sure I will do a broken down rail car, but I would like to add more dirty detail to the layout. I know I will never purchased steam or passenger trains for my layout, so it would have to be someone bringing their fleet to run on my layout.

Great video. I have a question about the " buffer cars" . Is that only for main line or switching as well. I see hazmat tank cars shipped in and out where I work and they rarely use buffer cars. They switch the local industries and return to the yard every day.
@coptrn78613 ай бұрын
*Gasp* No Buffer car for the hazmat cars?! lol. Just curious, why didn't you put the empty tanks to the far back track first? all good, 100 ways to switch an industry. enjoyed the video, and great scenic detail! As far as the lights go, you would want to set the Double Crossover as an OS (Opposing Signals, or Control Point). So, I would put a double head Signal at all 4 "corners" of the double crossover, to where if the lines were going straight, they would show the top signal lit with what ever signal aspect is appropriate, and if they were lined for the diverging route, the bottom aspect would be appropriatly lit. I am not completly spun up on how the CN sets up their signals, but if needed, I could email a basic plan of where to set up the signals, and what the aspects should show/mean.

The track track is out of commission at the moment. I believe I understand what you mean about the cross over lights. That helps a lot!

I don't know about the rules in Canada but, in America usually theirs a buffer car between the tanker car and the locomotive. Usually it's a covered red hopper car filled with sand if in the event of an explosion blast emits from the tank car, kinda safety precaution. Cheers!
@nscaler4543 ай бұрын
I think it's the same here. We are rule breakers on my layout :D
@NYCS193393 ай бұрын
@@nscaler454it does depend on the exact era though in the United States. I'm not sure exactly when buffer cars, usually just any non hazmat car between the locomotive and hazardous materials cars came out, maybe late 1980s? Some exceptions for switching I thought?
@seanwitt24633 ай бұрын
You’ll need four signals. We have the same set up on BNSF. Two tall signals between the mainline switches, and two dwarf signals going from the lead to the main.
@WMI5063 ай бұрын
No buffer needed when operating as a transfer. No SBU = no problem other than your going slower than snot. Also i believe there is an exception if the entire train is made up of dangerous goods (unit trains usually) then no buffer needed. But if there is one extra non dangerous car on the manifest it must be used as a buffer. Either way when being classified in a yard even if its a transfer if convenient a buffer will be placed.
