I think part of the reason why people feel the Bachmann N gauge models look too small is because they're more properly in-scale. The Bachmann HO gauge Thomas line are technically the slightly larger OO scale (except for Beau and some of the rolling stock) which makes them overscale and thus larger compared to things that are HO scale, the N gauge stuff is closer to properly N scale.
