American woman here that knows some Chinese. The word literally means "that". The song is called Rainbow, Sunshine, Unicorn. It's an uplifting song to tell people that they are more amazing than they think they are. The line you are listening to repeats the word "that" as in "You're that that that that that rainbow, sunshine, unicorn" - that's the literal translation. The Chinese language is far older than English. It's been around longer than our entire country. So, if Americans have created an offensive word that sounds like a normal, everyday Chinese (and Korean has a similar word) - that's our problem, not theirs.

I love watching their overdramatic reactions because this is a common Chinese phrase, but foreigners love to think it’s about them Edit: just realised it’s an edited video but my comment still applies to all the angry American commenters under that video

it still makes my blood boil remembering that some students got angry that a white teacher, on a lecture on filler words" said "nega" or "that" in chinese which is a filler word. like um, or uhhh. since he was proficient in chinese, hence he used chinese as a foreign example. like, fuck. such self centeredness of those students. there is 190+ more countries with some having been oppressed by western powers before. no foreigner is going to kowtow naking sure their language is abiding by whatever ego those kind of people has. so yeah. i am going to say the nigero, when Im speaking japanese. im going to say negros when referring to my hometown, im calling it montenegro, and Im saying negro when speaking spanish since I do know some spanish esp to my spanish relatives.

The KPOP stans in the comments trying to defend the song are so cringe, we make fun of the song because it sounds like he’s saying the nword, we know he’s not actually saying it so stop writing essays on why English people don’t know that other languages exist and start thinking about why your dad left you
