Why is there 2 crappie diesels behind her?
@yankinga2 ай бұрын
Because she was not designed and built to pull a train of that size over a sustained 2.2% grade. She has the highest tractive effort of any 4-8-4, but a factor of adhesion lower than the optimum 4.00, meaning that she might tend to be slippery on a long hard pull. She was built to rapidly accelerate from slowdowns on the N&W's rolling main line, not to challenge long grades like this one. Also, the diesels provided dynamic braking on the return trip, obviating the need to turn up retainers and wearing down the brake shoes on the train.

Great video! But the 611 will never see the rails if NS is to pay the bill. They are quite content with their current program with the TVRM. 611 needs a private group to step in with money and skill. NS has said if someone else restores her then they will consider operating her.

@PereMarquette1223 There's rumors that NS will bring her out one more time for their anniversary next year.

No it's coming back for real, perhaps 2014! Fire Up 611! is a newly formed group that is working to bring 611 back. Now there was just an announcement that it is feasible to return it to operation, so now they are going to send it to NCTM to work on it, and build a steam shop in Roanoke as well. It will be used with NS's 21st Century Steam Program.
