Flying American and United 737 MAX - How Airlines Are Bringing the MAX Back?

I recently flew with United on their B737 MAX 9 and American on their B737 MAX 8, on domestic flights within the US. This video details the flying experiences of the 737 MAX since its grounding.
My United 737 MAX 9 flight was from Miami to Houston. The pilots talked about the cockpit of the 737 MAX, the MCAS and the system in general. I review the MAX passenger cabin and speak about my thoughts on flying the 737 MAX.
My American 737 MAX 8 flight was a quick one from Orlando to Miami. I met up with aviation journalist Chris Sloan in Miami. He flew the first 737 MAX flight, since its grounding in the US, on an American B737 MAX 8 from Dallas to Tulsa. He visited American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Centre in Tulsa. Pilots of American talked about how they were trained to fly the MAX with the updated cockpit software and the MCAS system. The engineers talked about how long it takes to update each MAX and re-activate the plane from grounding.
Chris also shares his stories from behind the scenes, on how Boeing was rushed by customers to build the MAX instead of a producing clean sheet narrow body airplane.

In the interview while describing the new bigger screens in the cockpit, the pilot said “ for us older people that are vis..” then cut by short laugh (probably thinking of saying visually impaired) came to realize..”wait i should not say i am visually impired or i will lose my certification” hahaha.

The fact that the MCAS system only used one sensor is an incredibly stupid oversight. First rule of aircraft engineering is redundancy. That lesson was learned decades ago.

That's not oversight, that's stinginess! Even too stingy to build new landing gears, so the new engine would fit.

It was done on purpose. Apparently if it had been done properly with both sensors, it would have been considered a “major system modification” and would have added expense to the extension of pilots’ type ratings from the NG to the MAX. Of course now the cost of the MAX grounding and upgrades has dwarfed anything the bean counters would have saved, but they still get their raises and bonuses and of course no consequences for their actions.

MCAS? The fact that they had to resort to software solution to compensate the aerodynamic flaw that appeared because they had to use an oversized engine that no longer fit the 60 years old airframe is the actual stupid decision.

Before the Max crashes the 737 had one of the best safety records in the business. Remember the 737 was certified in 1967. But in the 1990’s it was grounded because of a condition called runaway ruder caused by a servo unit manufactured by Parker Hannifin. Two crashes killed 153 people which caused the grounding of the plane just like now with the MAX. The plane that came out of that accident investigation became the safest plane until the Max accidents. I have no doubts that just like before, this new 737 will be the best and safest aircraft ever built. I flown in the 737-8 already and I am perfectly satisfied.

737 is a great plane but it is old and not efficient. The MAX is a bad modification of it. Because of new big engine the plane is not balanced and it wants to go nose down but they compensated this with software which uses the tail aileron. For normal weather situations this will work but in case of emergency when you need to pull up fast the nose of the plane it will fail.

I flew on a 737ng multiple times with some of them equipped with the retrofitted sky interior. I still have not rode on a 737 max up until this point because the 737ng is still more common plane flying than the 737 max. I was only able to see the exterior of the 737 max with my own eyes in airports I go for stopovers. I already read that the 737 max is fixed and recertified therefore, I have the confidence to fly on the 737 max. I expect the 737 max interior to be the same interior as the retrofitted sky interior as the 737ng but with quieter engines. I know there would still be people refusing to fly the 737 max because of the crash history and reputation but there had been other types of planes with higher numbers of plane crashes and fatalities. I have no problem flying on a 737 max.

Money really speaks higher... If it wasn't for the pressure from these carriers, the Max would never have been built. Boeing would never get the stupid idea of using a 60's design on a modern airliner, the NSA that was on the works would be closer to finish, engines would be in the correct position and there would be no need for the MCAS system. Not even thinking about the billions of dollars that could have been saved by avoiding the grounding, 346 people would still be with us here today. Food for thought... 💭

Why were the ONLY two 737MAX crashes with third-world Airlines? Flying an airplane that up until the time of the crashes had experienced ZERO incidents. After a year of test flights the MAX gained certification from the FAA in March 2017, followed by other global regulators later that month. By May 2018, a year after the first delivery, more than 130-MAX's were in service with 28-different airlines around the world and had flown almost 42,000 flights. With ZERO incidents. Before the second crash, there were nearly 50-carriers that were operating the MAX. Using it for an estimated 8,600 flights per week. With no ZERO incidents. That the FAA and EASA didn't know about MCAS, a meme being pushed by BOEING BASHERS and the MSM, is bovine excrement. Although Boeing did not call MCAS out by that name, the Boeing Flight Crew Operation Manual (FCOM) described the function in detail, and how to override it. And 50-carriers crews had no problems with understanding it. The FCOM was successfully used by 50-carriers to train crews in flying the new 737 variant. Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines with their low-time inexperienced pilots and with inadequate management of their crew training - ruined the safety record of a perfectly safe airplane. The fuselage plug issue occurred in ONE airplane, out of 1,420 delivered and after flying over 100,000 incident free flights! The plane and crew handled the incident perfectly. Nobody was hurt. Not even a sticking plaster was needed in this "disaster"! Boeing and Spirit will take remedial action - and the 737MAX will go on to be as safe as any other commercial aircraft currently flying. Boeing has 4,031 MAX aircraft in its order backlog. You think these folks who fly these wonderful airplanes every day for a living think the MAX is dangerous? Yeah right! Crossing the street, or driving one's car to get groceries, is 1,000 times more likely to get you killed than flying in a Boeing 737MAX.
@philhenderson3516
@philhenderson3516 8 ай бұрын
@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp Perfectly safe plane!? Did you even read about the findings following those two accidents?! MCAS WOULD activate at random even if you tried to override it. Boeing was so cheap that they even outsourced MCAS to a company from India that had never worked on aviation products before. It was a faulty software from the get go, relied on ONLY ONE sensor (instead of two) for data, and didn't have any safeguard or fail proof systems integrated into it. Yup, keep drinking the kool aid. Probably getting paid by Boeing to write this "dissertation" of a comment. They're been exposed for what they are. Greedy, arrogant, and unprincipled. It caught up to them and nothing you or I can say will change that. Their reputation is done for.
@DennisMerwood-xk8wp
@DennisMerwood-xk8wp 8 ай бұрын
@@philhenderson3516 So how come 50-carriers had ZERO problems with flying their MAX's with MCAS? How could 1,430 aircraft fly over 100,000 flights with "faulty" software? Seems you are one who has been drinking the BOEING BASHING Kool Aid my friend. I have never worked for Boeing. I am a retired corporate jet pilot sitting in my Rest Home. Reading probably three times the industry articles you have about the findings following those two accidents. From a pilot's perspective. Not from an ignorant TV script writer trying to maximize viewers - and knowing disaster and blood sells. It is obvious to me that you have a typical layman's knowledge of jet airliner controls - and are just repeating the rubbish you see on MSM media. As for Boeing reputation being "done for" - recent aviation news: Emirates is boosting flights towards Seoul in South Korea adding additional Boeing 777-300ER to its fleet. Alaska Airlines has signaled its plans as the airline continues to transition towards the next generation of aircraft, with the 737 MAX family being its mainstay for its future flying. Boeing and the FAA will remedy the fuselage plug installation issues and recertify the airplane. There is nothing wrong with the plug design. Boeing has been through challenging times before and has always solved its challenges. With over 4,000-orders on its books for the MAX, they know that folks in the business who fly these wonderful aircraft every day for a living have not concluded the 737MAX is unsafe. And as soon as the next aviation incident occurs the 737MAX fuselage plug hysteria will disappear from the news cycle and the MSM vultures will jump onto the next incident like flies on shit. And social media "experts" like you will continue your ambulance chasing.

@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp That's what happened if you want to believe it or not. And American Airlines had reported an incident with the MCAS system a week before the Ethiopian incident. The AA plane did not crash because the system started acting up at a much higher altitude than the Ethiopian plane. They went through the same situation, and had they not had the additional 10,000 feet that the Ethiopian crew DIDN'T have to counter the system, we would be talking about another fatal crash involving the 737 MAX. They landed almost immediately thanks to sheer dumb luck, not because the pilots were able to defeat the system. And the reason there are 4,000 orders for the MAX is not because the airlines want them, it's because it is a controlled monopoly, it's either Airbus or Boeing with no other alternatives. Airbus can only build so much and airlines need the planes to stay in the business. If governments and the FAA cared about a fair market, don't you think Embraer and Bombardier would've flourished aside Airbus and Boeing? Boeing literally forced Bombardier and Embraer to shut down by misleading them into venture agreements, intentionally delaying and violating MTA clauses, leaving both companies heavily invested into the projects and out of cash. Your mentality of thinking that American companies can do no wrong and that we can do everything better than everybody else across the pond is what has us blinded and bringing us down as a country. Boeing's current leadership is vicious and it will not stop until someone finally reins them in. As for you, I hope your retirement gives you time to amend your thoughts and wander outside your bubble.

@AmbientMorality
@AmbientMorality 3 жыл бұрын
Quite a lot more than that. The probability of an MCAS system operating incorrectly is drastically reduced because it compares readings from two sensors and does not activate if the readings differ significantly. Furthermore, even if they agree and are both incorrect, MCAS will command trim-down once (which pilots can correct for, and did in both incident flights) and then do nothing further until both sensors agree that the aircraft has returned below the activation threshold. Effectively, the probability of an incorrect MCAS activation in the first place is drastically reduced, and the risk of repeated MCAS activation under false data (which was what ultimately caused both crashes) was virtually eliminated.

I have to say I love flying on the Max I’ve been on it several times with Southwest. Before the grounding. I have read just about every news article as well as the FAA’s report. There are plenty of mistakes made by Boeing as well as pilots experience level. And constant budget cuts to the FAA by Congress. I find it hilarious that then Congress is the one shouting at Boeing and the FAA that they should’ve done better how about we put money back into the FAA so private companies don’t regulate themselves. I only hope that Boeing continues innovation in the Boeing 737 line. It is sad to me to see the Boeing an American company seems like it’s not out innovating Airbus.

I have something to say .... if anyone is scared of the boeing 737 max.... then think about the DC10 , when it first started people are excited to fly the tri jet style mcdonnell douglas jet. as it released for commercial service soon problems start to evolve from one problem to another, which includes one of the reporters who is flying in the dc10 to mexico city ( Western air flight 2605 ) hated the plane since the crash of AA flight 191 which is another DC10. but as the incidents go by the plane improved as it does to make the plane better. All am saying is that just like the DC 10 ,the boeing 737 Max does have room for improvement to make it one of the efficient plane ever built. if anyone is scared to fly a boeing 737 max....then think about the DC 10 and it's varients on how it got from zero to hero 👍

Personally I don't trust private companies when they say everything is fine, I wait for the FAA to ok it... but the problem is the FAA were also responsible with Boeing in the problematic rollout of the Max, so then who do you trust? Also, I'm not sure if the pilot at the beginning talking about his aging eyesight encourages confidence either.
