Hello Arron, beautiful day with the snow. I always like to watch the interface of the wheels and bogies (trucks) with the rails. Watch how they behave and interact. Interesting how that first truck wheelset are a bit temperamental. I used to be a train driver in London by the way. And also study rail network and rolling stock. Have been slowly buying rail and train components for a garden 7/14". One day it'll happen.

@MrOmwm The wheel to rail interface is one of the most overlooked but truly fascinating parts of railway technology. What you observed on the front truck is called hunting. It happens when the rails are too far apart or when the wheels are worn. The reason it happens here is because of one of the compromises I was forced to make in order to have people over with their equipment. I'm my part of the country, we're all 7-1/4" gauge, but just a few hours away, we start to see 7-1/2" gauge and now 7-5/8" gauge (track only) across the rest of the country. So, I've made compromises to make it work. It's a good thing, too! Especially since I've started building locomotives and rolling stock for people. My thoughts on preparing to build a railway: I wholly encourage it, but you don't have to accumulate all the parts before you start. If you have a place to put a railway and you're able to use a rake and a shovel, then you have all you need to start building a railway. All the other things, like the Moasure and the fun tech stuff, make the job easier, but you can build a railway without them.

If you have precision tools is those boxes. Wipe those tools down with oil. You don't want condensation rusting them.
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 12 күн бұрын
@toadjam12000 Yes, there are precision tools in those boxes. They had been sitting in cold storage for years already. Some of them corroded, and some didn't. They all needed a good wipe down with light oil. Some went back in the tool box and some went right into the trash. Throwing out the electronic height indicator really hurt, but there was nothing that could be done for it. The case had corroded and damaged the mechanism and electronics beyond repair, despite me taking the battery out before storing it. That's just the way it goes sometimes. I'll replace it with a mechanical dial indicator.

Hey, I super enjoy watching your backyard railroad thx for making the videos! How long is your railroad, when you do the video with the view of sitting on the engine, it looks like it takes quite a bit to go around?
@MillBrookRailroad

It's only 970 feet of track end to end. Top speed is 8 miles per hour, so the reason it takes five minutes to run the length of the line is because I'm not in a hurry.

do you have plans to add additional track to your system. (maybe down the hill yu pass near) do you have like a master track plan?

I do plan to add more track, but roadbed construction has been very slow.

I use a Dimension Engineering SyRen 50 motor controller, which allows me to connect any R/C receiver directly to it. At the moment, I'm using the cheapest 3 channel 2.4 GHz digital R/C radio from Amazon. amzn.to/4gUtWsC

Ive got a wild hair somewhere, and i was wondering if you sell those custom made tie plates. I am going to attempt building a loop of track in my backyard, before i get too old to do so. What would 100 of those tie plates cost, including shipping & handling, to a location in central Illinois 🤔❓ i dont use/have E-mail, so it might be an issue with a mailing address.

Nice video as always. Is it just me or does the front wheel on the leading bogie of the car seem to be lifting up of the rail from 2:19 to 2:28 ?

Pellet transport again? Running pellet trains every 5 days? Do You run an electrical power plant or what? Joking! Putting up speed restrictions here and there might be an option to avoid running on the ground.... By the way, what's the end to end distance of Your railroad?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 12 күн бұрын
We're heating two houses with wood pellets. Speed restrictions sometimes help south bad spots. The track is 970 feet from end to end.

@@MillBrookRailroad Hope You took the joke well. For me derailing is like bad words in the church... Not used to bad axles/tracks on miniature railroads nor on real railroads like Yours.... Check BMAS in Sweden. I could write a book about that railroad. Was part of their start up... 7 1/4 track....

Your going to need a lot of pellets coming Monday through Wed. I Don't know about you, but here in Ohio they are saying at night -12 and during the day a whopping 4 deg. for the high wind chills of -20. :P

Wanted to ask is there a reason the track dont go closer to the house or by tye house and tie in to the line. I understand its cool to run trains around the horseshoe curve. Have a great day be safe
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 13 күн бұрын
That's a good question. There are a couple reasons the track doesn't make a loop. One is that the grade would be too steep. The second is that I didn't want to cross the driveway. The track doesn't come closer to the house because I haven't built the track yet that goes into the house. Thanks for watching!

Nice tool boxes! the universal catch all, litter containers! they are great in the garden too! yes, it would not be the Mill Brook with out at least 1 derailment. was that a bad spot? out of gauge? great job , nice light run of pellets for heating! how has the heating been going? hope all is well and things are going smooth. are you on the air for the radio? take care Aaron.

I've had these tool boxes for years since I worked in the machine shops. Old buckets are great for carrying things. In this case, it was tooling for the antique lathe. Bad spots crop up all winter long. It's been a milder than expected year, weather wise. I'm on the air on weekday afternoons from 3-7 on WCVR. www.northcountry1320.com I also maintain radio stations as a broadcast engineer.
