I speak conversational Japanese. My wife is Japanese. I'm not very good, barely passable. But I found the slow intonation actually harder to understand. I understood everything fine, but I feel it would have been easier to understand at a natural pace, instead of the slow intonation that was used. I'm not complaining, I'm just curious to those who are learning Japanese... does this make it easier or is a natural pace better? I find that if I'm going to understand it, it doesn't matter what speed and pace it is I will get it. But slow and drawn out like this makes it more unnatural and thus harder. But I learned naturally. I picked up Japanese while living in Japan and learned it from the kids I taught naturally. What's it like for people studying?
@louish5068
@louish5068 Ай бұрын
I am assuming that as well as naturally picking up japanese through conversation you also studied at first at least too?
@dracoerrarus4834

I’m not quite N5 yet. I find it reassuring when I can pick out some words and thereby get a gist of the conversation, but I’ve decided to listen to more conversations to learn faster, and I prefer this speed for now.

@@louish5068 Nah. I faked my way through a few college courses. By the time I got to Japan a few years later I had forgotten everything. I could say my name, poorly. That's about it. One day, a month or two later, I realized I was able to understand a few simple things. (I had a toy that spoke a few phrases of Japanese. I found it cleaning and realized that instead of gibberish, I could understand everything it said. It was a mind blowing moment.) Then a month or two after that I realized I was able to speak enough to get my point across. I never studied while living there. Just interacted with my students and coworkers all day, which 99.9% of them didn't speak a lick of English. Survival mode - my brain just switched on language acquisition. Sadly though, as soon as I hit the point where I could communicate casually, my brain switched off survival mode. I should have taken advantage of that time and studied, but sadly I didn't.

N4 is meant to be a bit slower because it is easier to understand
@Cortinaturbo1974
@Cortinaturbo1974 Ай бұрын
Its easier to understand and keep up with at a slower pace as you learn. A lot of words can sound similar so as you are tuning your ear it’s easy to differentiate
