Dahlonaga is a great area. Been there many times doing SOTA. Perhaps you attended UNG. Congratulations about the Elecraft combo. I think you will be pleased. Many of my viewers have bought the combo. A couple of them bought two. They wanted a spare. Everyone had reported to me how pleased they are with it. We have a post about it in the Technical collection on my Patreon site. Members post their thoughts and suggestions. All are happy.

@@n4hnhradio do you think the Chameleon HYBRID MINI will be a good antenna for this pwr combo? it is rated at 500 watts SSB and I will be using 130ft wire for it along with a good radial system... but wonder if that is just too close? What antenna system would you recommend in the +/-$600 price range?
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
That’s a good price compared to some amplifiers. There are lesser quality amps that cost nearly that much. Of course there are amps that cost even more. So I think Elecraft represents the best value.

As of 10/6/22 still their web site not updated for the cables for FTdx10. Their web site has always been confusing ordering cables. This helped a lot. Thank you.
@n4hnhradio2 жыл бұрын
I spoke to Eric Schwartz at the Huntsville Hamfest and he wrote a note about getting the web site updated. I don’t know how long that will take. I’ve always done my own web site development, since 1996, so for me it takes minutes. In the meantime, I hope people find this video, so they will purchase the correct cable. Elecraft is sending me their CBL-YAE-BKMINI to test with the new Yaesu FT-710 AESS. They believe it will work. Of course I am waiting to receive an FT-710 AESS at the moment, so I can test to confirm that the CBL-YAE-BKMINI will work with the FT-710 AESS. 73, de N4HNH

Robert, you might have to tell Elecraft the part number. The people who answer the phone are very nice but they have sent the wrong cable before. It is the same cable that is listed for the FTdx1200. 73, Doug

@@n4hnhradio HI Doug. I have another question for you regarding the Elecraft cable (CBL-YAE-BKDIN10). You mentioned that this cable will get you ENHANCED MODE. I've used the KPA500 with my FTDX10 and I bought the Elecraft cable for it. The only real issue I have with it is having to change the power out from the FTDX10 when going to from standby to operate. The Elecraft K3 actually changes it output from 100-30 watts (or what ever you want) when you alternate from standby to operate. I don't "THINK" the interface can do this while using Yaesu radios.
@n4hnhradio2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The Elecraft transceivers can use Enhanced mode.
@boomerbits2297 Жыл бұрын
@@n4hnhradio I usually run about 15 to 20 watts to drive my KPA500 so its not an issue here. If I want more output, I will crank it all the way up to 25 watts to drive the amp to close to 500 watts. Of course, by then its already past the tune it up mode anyway. My second Elecraft Combo. The first lived behind my K3 a number of years ago. Now its does just a fine job sitting behind my FTDX 10.
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
The KPA-500 is great! The combination of the KPA-500 and KAT-500 is phenomenal! Many don’t realize what they’re missing. Bob at Elecraft told me that 600W is no problem for the KPA-500, if you think you need it. My brother has run 630W with his. But you gain the most difference in punch in the first 400W anyway. 500W is icing on the cake.

I once owned a 600 watt tube amp connected to a 50 foot high HF beam, and rarely used the amp. Now (different QTH) I use an FTDX10 connected to an inverted L Marconi wire antenna. The Elecraft combo seems so cool. I was wondering during what circumstances you personally use the amp, and what percent of your overall transmit time you use the amp. (The view from Tray Mountain on your QSL card is absolutely stunning, by the way.) Great video, as always. Thanks for all you do.
@n4hnhradio2 жыл бұрын
Hi RalphB! I use the amp quite often actually, except on 60 meters. I don't have a beam, so I sometimes need the help in order to work the QRP SOTA stations out West. Some of them are operating with a makeshift antenna system and some of the lighter weight QRP transceivers don't have the filtering of the larger transceivers. So, I want to make sure that I get through. If I'm operating on a band that needs no antenna matching unit, like 12, 17, 20, or 40m with the ZS6BKW, I try just the 200W from the FTdx5000. If I struggle to get through, I turn on the amplifier and try 500-600W. That is usually enough. If I'm on 160m, 80m, or 40m in the evening, I usually use the amp. The people I talk to on those bands run amps, and if I don't use mine, I'm the odd man out, making them have to increase their RF gain to hear me, compared to everyone else. They like to keep RF gain rolled back, so they hear no atmospheric noise between words and phrases. 73, Doug

Hi Doug - Did you say the CBL-YAE-BKDIN10 cables are supposed to be included in the price? I too was somehow under that impression when I purchased the combination in May But the only cable included was the power cable that plugs into the 120 volt wall socket. The other cables were $59.95 each (CBLE-YAE-BKDIN10 for the ftdx10 and the one for the ftdx101). I did call Elecraft and ask and they said only the power cable of my choice is included. Great video!!! Mark

Maybe they stopped offering that. One of my viewers ordered the combo earlier this year and the cable was included. He just had to specify which one. Maybe he was referring to the power cable.

Oh no, Cliff! I posted this in response to some calls and emails I’ve had about confusion related to the cables and how to connect them. But, if you’re thinking of getting an amplifier, an American-made Elecraft is hard to beat. A number of my viewers can attest to that. 73, Doug

I take it for granted that when you ( train your tuner every 25 KHz) , that is a one only situation. Do that once only?
@n4hnhradio2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great observation. You are correct. It has 1,000 memory slots. Let it find a match every 25 kHz on every band once and that’s it. Be sure to match for every antenna you will use. If you have two to choose from for the same band, match both. Note that for 160m you will probably want to match every 10 kHz. The SWR on that band can change significantly in as little as 10 kHz change in frequency. 73, de N4HNH

Does anyone have experience with the Yaesu Quadra amplifier? I have the FTFX5000 and my OCD tells me to buy it instead of an Elecraft :-) Should I buy that or an Elecraft?
@n4hnhradio2 жыл бұрын
In know a guy with a FTdx5000 and a Quadra. His Quadra has never failed. He has had it well over 10 years. He generally runs 800W. The Quadra is now discontinued so there will come a time when Yaesu will no longer maintain replacement parts for it. I personally like the Elecraft. My KPA-1500 can match just about anything and provide up to 1,500W with full automation. If you have an opportunity to buy a Quadra now, you might want to take advantage. Elecraft equipment is back-ordered right now. 73, de N4HNH
