Why We Don't Teach Readings (yet!) As mentioned in the introduction video to this series ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHy6o4qIe96Zj9E ), it is my philosophy that it is a WASTE OF TIME to learn the readings for each kanji in isolation. I explain WHY in that video. To learn how to read kanji, I think it is best to learn WORDS that contain that kanji in the context of SENTENCES. We WILL be doing that in this series, after learning the meanings and writings for the 118 kanji in the JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 tests. So fear not! You WILL be learning how to read them in the near future. 😊

I'm at that weird place where I already know these kanji well enough that I don't need the mnemonics anymore. Writing out the calendar date each day in Japanese helped me out a lot with that. But I'm really looking forward to the next of these, also really can't wait to start incorporating them into words too.

Writing the date everyday is a smart thing, I'm gonna adopt that

Last year, I was 10 points away from passing the JLPT5 test. I'm pleased to state that I instantly recognized all of the kanji in this video. I need to get back into my studies again so I can hopefully pass on my next attempt.

I don’t quite understand what ‘official radical’ means? Take 100 - what does it mean that the official radical is white? It’s the base building block of the kanji? Why does that matter? Maybe it will make more sense on more complex kanji? :thinking:

Another way to remember 100 is to look at the kanji sideways. It kindof has a sideways 1 at the top and two 0's below it, just like a sideways 100 (where all the numbers just happen to be connected)

Instead of banana, I sort of get a crescent moon vibe for the ancient version of moon. =) I got them all right!
@miles27613 Жыл бұрын
If you look back at the evolution of Kanji from the Chinese Hanzi you'd see that your intuition is correct, the old symbol for moon used to be much more simplified looking more like a "D" and resembling a crescent moon! :)

You know the drill! 十 is jiuu, 日 actually has quite a few readings that I know of (hi is the most common, used when used by itself, but when with another kanji, it is nichi. And when used in a day of the week word, at the end, the 日 will be pronounced bi, very important it's at the end because Sunday 日曜日 is nichiyoubi, and not "biyoubi" and finally, when used for a day of the month it makes ka) anyway 月 is tsugi, but when used as a way to denote the month, it's pronounced "gatsu". 白 is pronounced shiro, and 百 is pronounced hyaku.

Tokini Andy: want to get to level N5 by my Japan vacation, 2024, June 21-July 6…. Now, would you recommend that I memorize Hiragana and Katakana and learn some Kangi first before I begin anything else. I have memorized hiragana and now am working on Katakana… I am working with Rocket languages, too… I need direction and the tools I should be using… I am a retired teacher so I have time. Thanks, John

I think, we can imagine the 100 this way, "I paid 100 yen to ride on the cable car which was white"

For me, i just remember that the sun (日)is a hundred earths long, and 一 looks long. I like that mneumonic better, its a lot less work for me.

Can you add prononciation in japanese to this serie, that would help a lot

We will be doing that after learning the first 118 kanji. We won’t be doing it along with the meanings. I am against that method.

I don't understand why you don't teach the Japanese words associated to the kanji, it's a good opportunity to learn the numbers, nichi, tsuki, shiro etc

The only thing I’d add is to how to say these Kanji in Japanese instead of just knowing what they mean. Like how ten is じゅう (Juuh

That's in the second part of the series (which we're restarting soon). 😊 I think it's important to separate those steps.
