Update to n54 oil cooler retrofit- After moving to a colder state, I noticed my engine oil taking a long time to warm up. Just for kicks I tried swapping in the oem n54 oil tstat, and it warms up quickly now. After looking into it, it turns out the FTP low temp oil "thermostat" functions just as a bypass, the same as BMS. So if you are using are going to retrofit the n54 oil cooler in a state that gets cold, swap the stock tstat back in during the cold season. I have not found a legitimate low temp tstat solution yet that actually functions as a tstat.

mosselman do a oil cooler thermostat, replaces the whole piece that bolts to the OFH, works perfectly, opens earlier keeping the temps lower overall, around 10 degrees C. also Mahle are the OEM manufacturer for gaskets and even the valve cover, its not like BMW actually make parts.

The N54 engine has a higher flow oil pump than the N52 engine. So fitting the additional oil cooler to the N52 engine with a different oil pump may cause reduced oil pressure issues under certain operating conditions.

The e83 x3 sport model comes with an oil cooler and its on the passenger side should be straight fit.

are you thinking of the heat exchanger? that is also an option, better for climates that get cold

Good upgrade and thanks for sharing. Thinking about adding this to my Z4 but curious as to how I would route and fit in my chassis. Do you know of any Z4 owners with the n52 that have done this?
@RaimundN52 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Unfortunately I don't have any first or second hand experience with the Z4 and how the fitment is. I would suggest checking out the N54 z4 35is and see what they did there and if it's the same part number

What did you do with oem coolant hose that is connected to the oem water oil cooler. ?
@RaimundN52 Жыл бұрын
I didn't have one on my car. But you can just replace it with the non oil heater hose or a plug
@vodkalust1 Жыл бұрын
@@RaimundN52 alright ill see what i can do. Wanted to check before i order the part. Btw do u need only the front part or do i need the whole housing for the retrofit.

@@vodkalust1 did you find a way around the oem coolant hose?
@turdferguson19456 ай бұрын
Elring is the oem manufacturer.
@RaimundN526 ай бұрын
I have had Elring prematurely fail also. Whether it be better QC when sold through BMW or something else I don't know.
@turdferguson19455 ай бұрын
@RaimundN52 yeah, and the original bmw ones fail as well, so since elring makes the gaskets for bmw, people shouldn't be fooled that they're getting a superior quality gasket just because they're buying a gasket with a bmw logo on the package.

How much oil capacity does that add? It doesn't look like it would drain while doing an oil change, so I'm guessing you just have to add some extra during the initial fill? But after that it's the normal amount during every oil change.
@RaimundN52 Жыл бұрын
I believe it's about 0.5L extra capacity. Yes it doesn't drain when changing the oil so just on the initial fill it will need some more

Hi, did you had the heat exchenger before installing the N54 oil housing? and if so what you did with the coolant pipe?
@RaimundN528 ай бұрын
It can simply be capped off at the metal pipe if manual and a non oil cooler rubber hose can be used

Is it possible to swap out an n52 for an n54 in an lci e60 ? full motor and trans swap if necessary
@RaimundN52 Жыл бұрын
I don't see why not, as there are 535i with the n54. At minimum you will need DME CAS key engine transmission driveshaft

Are you able to swap an awd model n52 instead of the rwd motor, obviously the oil pan and I assume the pickup would need to be changed but I’m having a hard time finding a rwd n52 for my 330i, was wondering if that was an option
@RaimundN52 Жыл бұрын
Yes you can just swap the oil pan and oil pickup tube

i have an n52 328 without oil cooler and it gets up to 121 C/250F very easily and i’ve seen the temp gauge climb as high as 270 F doing pulls on the highway. Would that indicate some issue with cooling, or is that normal for stock? just looking to make the repairs that make the most sense before a mod Edit : i also pmed you on instagram about this would greatly appreciate some help

No unless your fan is going crazy these engines run hot check for leaks and try a coolant flush and you should be good.
