If someone told me five years ago that there was a live recording of Sopwith Camel from '73, Ida told them to GET OUT!
Turns out there is and now that I've heard it, the world is a better place.
Wild!
This is a short video synced with this very clear audience recording, live from the New Orleans House, Berkeley, CA
July 14, 1973
Peter Kraemer - saxophone, flute, synths, vocals
Terry MacNeil - electric piano, guitars, vocals
Martin Beard - electric bass, vocals
Norman Mayell - drums, percussion, harmonica
Special thanks to the taper and digital archivist(s)!

Tobin Mayell here, Son of drummer, Norman Mayell. I love reading your comments about Sopwith Camel. I was born in '71 and grew up with this band and their music. Norm died August of 2022 at 80, leaving me his drums, songs and spirit. I am honored to continue his legacy now. At age 51, I'm recording with his widow, Judy, and we are turning our live tribute performance honoring Norman into a full album with songs Norman wrote, played and loved to cover. Coming out November 2023! My talented Son, Emrys Mayell, Norman's grandson, is making an incredible documentary on Norman's memorial.

Tobin, So glad to read your response here. I was in a record store back in 1975 or so and picked up The Hump out of curiosity. The cover was very intriguing. I asked a friend who was with me if it was any good and he said it “was a classic”. He had never heard it and was obviously joking but I took him seriously and bought it. I’ve probably listened to it 3 or 4 times a year since that lucky purchase. My favorite release was the second remaster on CD which was from the lost and found in the garage tape. Less noise reduction. Your father did excellent work along with the Bassist which as a Bassist myself really appreciate when the rhythm section is really cooking and in sync with each other. Makes me think of the pre 1976 Camel’s rhythm section. You should be very proud of your Dad and this record. It is one of those magical phenomenons that rarely occur and many times only once per Band. Didn’t Pink Floyd outdo them selves with Dark Side?

A very under-rated/mostly unknown band from the ‘70s. I discovered them back then when I was in high school. One of my favourite albums! Really appreciate this live video!

Berkeley 1973! I lived about a mile away, and was probably studying that night, or maybe blowing out my ears on headphones. Should have gone out an listened to these guys, but at least I can imagine it now. thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting this. I still listen to the Miraculous Hump Returns From the moon to this day. I discovered it about 1974 or so. Great band, musicianship and songwriting. A testament to the wacky 70's.

This is surreal! Never thought Id find any live Sopwith Camel. What a great band/sound Fazon.. Ive never known what that means. Anybody?
@GardettoJones
@GardettoJones 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe "Fazon" is made up word used to describe a level of euphoria achieved by Hawaiian hashish from the early 70's. Perhaps?

@@GardettoJones haha. Had alot of blonde lebanese and afghani hash but never Hawaiian. Yeah I like your thought on what Fazon means-sounds good to me

In my opinion - one of the BEST psychedelic bands the Bay Area every produced and much better than the ones that got all the press - they got a raw deal from the record companies but that's the story of many talented bands - usta play with Peter back in the late 80's great horn play and singer/songwriter -

I was a regular at their New Orleans House shows so I was probably there the night this recording was made. Forty years later I was a regular at their Art House shows even though I had to take MegaBus down to Berkeley to be there.

@GardettoJones

Actually, it was officially released on CD by Warner: First in 2001 as the "Millennium Edition" from a safety copy. Then it was remastered/re-released from the original masters as "Remaster 2006". Both out-of-print and hard to find now. I managed to find a good deal on the 2006 version on Ebay years ago. Now it's a mint. Good luck!
