i fell in love with cretan music the moment i heard it on the bus from Chania to Sfakia, no even before at a little cafe in Chania my first morning...then i rented a car in rethymnon and stopped in spilli where i purchased 3 CDs of Nikos and his brother Yannis. i listened to one on the road down from the village of Thronos to the rich dark purple sea at Villa Maria just a bit east, or west? of Loutros. What a beautiful 2 weeks full of the friendliest and most genuine people i have ever met. I still listen to this music 12 years later, all the time. I hope at age 70 i can return, but if not my memories are as if they were yesterday...thank you

the night i stayed in Spilli, with Heracles, i notice a group of friends sitting down in the neighbor's yard. about 10 of them. then they started playing, lyra and louta, from 10 pm to 1 am...and singing, and they all knew the songs and the choruses.. it was wonderful, and it was a tuesday night , not the weekend! in USA this would never happen, and if it did, people would complain. .... I was so happy i could listen and watch from my balcony...next day i asked Heracles, was there some special occasion? He smiled and laughed, and said, No! we do that whenever we feel like, and we all enjoy it... and i had had a meal in a little cafe, and noticed the owner listening to cretan music, thank god its the ONLY music i heard , no pop at all, i mean it was playing for the small cafe, but he was sitting at his computer, the music was coming from You Tube!!! he showed me a bunch of new musicians, and when i got home i listened to hundreds, like this. One good use of technology!
