@@Marco-qt5nv While I wouldn't be surprised sexism is the cause for this, it's because the word is diminutive, which you can see because the word ends with "chen", and all those words are considered objects in the language

@HRJ-c7q4 ай бұрын
@@itsmwambintime4254 actually there is a practical need for this. Mädchen stays the same no matter if plural or singular. Now in German plural is always formed with the female case. AKA die. If we would use 'Die Mädchen' as the normal description you would always require context clues to know if they are talking about one or many. Thus 'Das Mädchen# is better.

Having gendered things with Der, die, das is actually basically the standard of languages. Dutch, Spanish, and French have it (and many more that I don't know about). It's more that English that is the exception.

The examples you gave are European languages and are part of the Indo-European language family, so not really a standard within languages, mostly with Indo-European ones, although there are other languages from different families that have gendered grammar as well.

German is not about genders, it's about how words are formed. Lots of languages have different endings (flexions). In english it's comparable to human names when most male names end with consonant "n, l, k, etc." And female names end with vowels "a, e, y and others" that differs words by "genders".

In italian we have 3 articles as well, the female one, the male one and then another male one, so we have 2 males and you choose which to use based on the first letter of the word letter after it, then we have the plural version of all of them. And this were the determinate articles, then there are the indeterminate ones, and they are 2 males and 2 females, again, you chose which to use based on the first letter of the next word, and they are only singular, unless you are talking about an indefinite quantity. To close things, sometimes instead of choosing one article you chose the other but take off the last letter of the article and put an apostrofe

It's just a language thing. Difficulty in language is relative as fuck. If you speak English that's the hardest aspect besides pronunciation. This gender thing is the normie take on language esoterics. It's just an abstraction. Every language in existence is rife with exceptions and perceived randomness, especially when accounting for none of the history or origin of nouns. If I started from Chinese, German would seem absurdly difficult. Romance and Germanic languages have gendered nouns, it's the most normal thing ever for them.
