Stuff like this serves to illustrate that tech hinged on smartphone apps has an inherently finite lifespan. These would've been far more impressive if the adjustability weren't reliant on internet-based services. Also the app likely served as a way for Nike to collect consumer data, a concerning practice which people are all too comfortable with nowadays.

I've owned two pairs of the Adapt BBs. I currently own the Mag-inspired colorway. I think that Nike did create the best version of "self-lacing" shoes with the Adapt technology. I also personally think that the Adapt BBs were also pretty comfortable and did not have the problem of being heavy on feet, like the self-lacing version of the Mags did. Being able to lace up your shoes with your phone or the press of a button was also very cool. All that being said, "self-lacing" technology just doesn't really have any real advantage over manual laces (or velcro or slip on shoes). Couple that with the fact that you need to keep your shoes charged up and have a solid connection with your phone and the overall experience kind of has its own disadvantages over manual lacing shoes. Honestly, I don't really think anyone even really had a problem with manually tying your shoes and the Mags in BTTF were mostly just something that was cool rather than a solution to a real problem. I still think the shoes were a cool idea and will definitely be cool collector's items, but I don't think self-lacing shoes will ever really become the new normal.

Its kinda funny to think the real advantage of self lacing is for disabled/elderly/injured people, and it was solved by slip on "technology". Reminds me how the russians just used pencils in space while america spent millions on zero g pen r&d.

Figuring out how to miniaturize and fully encase the hardware/software into a tight waterproof compartment and then strategically put them in an area of the sneaker that won't lessen the comfort of the wearer is really important but also quite difficult.

I find it a bit counterintuitive to use an app to adjust your $450 laceless shoes for 'optimal comfort' It would take you the same amount of time to do so with actual shoes with laces, if not less... so if this product is born out of a need to solve a problem & to make life easier, these sneakers definitely go against this principle.

Yeah as far as the athletic demographic it seems like a superfluous gimmick. But I could see these benefitting someone who has a physical disability and has trouble tying their shoes as a result. Though for the price there's way simpler options.

A big detriment to its performance on the court is how heavy it is, weighing almost double what players are used to. It’s also super hard for shoe companies, even NIKE to put out a new silhouette and have it be popular for lifestyle. People wear dunks, sambas, 1s etc; stuff that was created a long time ago. Not many people are daring enough to stand out. And also, the price. I wonder if going down a size would compensate for the lacing not functioning any more, unless the app was optional and you could still use the midsole buttons

So far, both Adidas and Nike have proven that putting too much tech in a shoe will be it's own demise. Anyone still remember the Adidas 1 and Adidas 1.1? I think the problem with these two novel ideas is that the tech got too novel that it no longer became practical.

I have elastic laces on a pair of Nike Drop Type mid and they literally adjust to a perfect fit by themselves. Don't even need to untie them, they easily slip on. This (Adapt) is a complex solution to a simple problem, which was kind of the base ethos of a _lot_ of that fantasy tech from 80s movies.

I have all pairs of ADAPT shoes becuase they are seriously the best. I think where Nike failed was getting the word out and advertising them. To this day, every time I wear my Jordan 11 Adapts, people are shocked to hear they are auto-lacing and that it's actually a real thing. Becuase of how much I like them I actually have 2 pairs of each, one to wear and one for just in case. I'm sad when I got the notice in the Nike app that they are going to discontinue the app, becuase this really makes the experience come alive. If you can get your hands on them I suggest getting them because they truly are the best fitting and comfortable shoes ever made!

They created a solution to something that wasn't a problem. If you can't tie shoelaces, then you're too young, too big or too disabled, and all three have alternatives that are better, easier and allow for more actual independence. No one needs shoes that tie themselves.

I have the Adapt BB and Auto Max. Really for the price the tech is cool but the fit isn't great. I don't tie laces any shoe, so they are left reasonably loose. The Adapts are tight without even using the fit tech. Even slightly tightening them meant fatigued feet. They do look good though, but withdrawal of the app takes away 75% of the coolness and you're left with an LA Gear lightup shoe that kids wore in the 90s.

They became hype collectors shoes that people didn't buy to wear. They bought to resell. The price went to stupid ranges like $1500+ and regular people couldn't actually buy them..to actually wear. Hype Beast kills real mainstream adoption. If regular people can't buy them for $150 to $300 and easily get it, it will die.

For $700 a pair, it's already dead. No one will shell out $700 on a self lacing shoe.

Dang. If I was an investor, I would've sunk a lot of money into this shoe because I would've assumed that it would be the next big thing. But this just goes to show that you never know what will work.

Thank you for replying King. Can you do a vid on the Jordan 7's and possibly 8's? That gen has grown up and all we get is 1's and 4's in thousands of colorways. Is it because they don't have the equipment that made them? Is it production costs? Definitely not a demand issue. They sell before I even get a chance.

I have these, they feel great and are a super cool party trick I'm really sad they didn't take off. Most people just didnt know they exist which I think is part of the problem. Also they are SUPER loud if you adjust them, the entire room will look over at you because of the wirring noise....happened in the middle of my biology final so NO MORE TAKING THEM TO SCHOOL AFTER THAT
