I spent most of time modelling in LW but some parts are rendered in Marmoset etc. along with post-painting in Photoshop. Epi but that would mess up the flow of rhythm and throw off the music, I stopped playing many a rhythm action game because of sound effects

Only if they're poorly done. I personally can't play rhythm games without hitsounds because it becomes harder to gauge how bad my timing is. In addition, on some charts I simply can't tell which instrument the creator wants me to follow. Hitsounds alleviate that issue.
