Nadaswaram is called Mangala Vaadhyaam. No other instrument can replace that. It is not easy to play. I was born in a village in the present day Thiruvarur District. My village was surrounded by Nadaswaram Vidwans. 4 KMs from my village is Thiruveezhimizhalai. brothers Govindaraja Pillai & Nataraja Pillai (I understand Sivakarthikeyan is the grandson of one of the brothers). Another duo vidwan was from Thirucherai Another Vidwan was from Thiruvidaimarudhur P.S. Veerasamy Pillai. Needless to say that Thiruvaavaduthurai is also a nearby place and I need not mention the name of the vidwan. The village was famous because of that vidwan. He was the Nadawara Chakravarthy T.N. Rajaratnam Pillai. Thiruvengadu was in the same district but now it is in Mayiladuthurai district. Subramaniya Pillai made Thiruvengadu a famous place before the Navagraha temples became famous. Injikkudi, another village nearby gave us Injikkudi Pitchaikannu brothers. Unfortunate that after the rise of DMK & Kalainger Karunanidhi, we see the decline of Nadaswaram. May be, that is why Thiruvarur Bhskthavatsam has moved away to play Thavil for vocal & Violin concerts as there was not many Nadaswaram Vidwans to play for.

A very detailed narrative. I am also Tiruvarur, I am now 68 years running. In my school days, I use to go to Engan for Maasi Krithigai where many Nadaswaram and Thavil vidwans participate. Thirumeignananm Nataraja Sundaram also a great Nadaswara vidwan.
