A large part of XDefiant’s target audience was older CoD players who gave up on the genre, and those who are at wits end with CoD. People stuck in the loop with modern CoD titles year after year are pretty much a lost cause and were never expected to be a substantial part of the player base. Ubisoft itself is on the verge of collapse, they weren’t willing to fund it long term.

You can have a good game, but you must have the numbers high both on player counts and money revenue from the game for it to be successful and for it to continue supporting the game. Less of that will slowly kill the game and that's what's happening with xdefiant.

A game could definitely compete with COD if it tried to innovate. One of the problems I had with XDefiant is that it just felt like another generic FPS that I've played several times before. If EA didn't decide to exclusively focus on the Battle Royale trend, I'm sure Titanfall would've been capable of overtaking COD.

Xd wasn't a bad game, it was fun for a few weeks but it had some major issues like most games do these days that they were not able to fix quickly and the drip feed content was to slow and boring. I , like a lot of players, don't have lots of time to play every day so playing Cod is just a better investment of my time, theres more to play and work towards with the camo/challenge grinds. So adding another game like it, but not as good, with another battle pass, longer grinds for less cool looking stuff and super sweats in every match, buying anything in that game was never gonna happen. I'm not happy it failed but Im not surprised either.

The "sad" part is they were going to add all those things, next season they were adding Prestiges and a bunch more but Ubisoft are going bankrupt so they just gave the middlefinger to every player and dev... Mark (creator of Xdefiant) was informed about the "sunset" of his own game a week prior to the announcement... some of the staff was only informed the day prior, Ubisoft kills games, I'm hoping they go bankrupt and get sold

I dont think anything will ever compete with cod and not even just because it’s a better game but the player base is loyal, it’s going to be really hard for another fps to obtain that, no matter how many times cod fucks up, fifa is in this situation, it’s one of the most hated games but the fans still come back every year despite all the heavy issues. XDefiant did pick up some steam and being called the cod killer it was good to see competition in the space but it was never going to be enough.

It’s not that XDefiant wasn’t a good game, it was! It’s that Ubisoft is absolutely a “F’ed” company! I played it just to see and it was pretty good. But my great disdain and disgust for Ubisoft ensured I rejected that game and everything they do! Any other company published that game, I would still be playing a spending money. I would play BO6 as well but would spend a lot less on micro transactions in BO6. I know how Activision treats the community and exploits us for the micro trans dollar but I don’t care! I want my pretty gun!

A lot of facts here. The game improved drastically. I always had fun playing it, but man they figured out that netcode and the game was solid. However, where it failed was outside the gameplay. Just little content to grind for and keep people hooked. Unfortunately now a days a game can't survive strictly off good gameplay with minimal elements of progression.
