All of Us Strangers is a 2023 British romantic fantasy film written and directed by Andrew Haigh, and based on the 1987 novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada. It is the second feature adaptation of the novel, after the Japanese film The Discarnates (1988). The film stars Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell, and Claire Foy.
All of Us Strangers premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on 31 August 2023. It was released in the United States on 22 December 2023 and in the United Kingdom on 26 January 2024, by Searchlight Pictures. It received critical acclaim and was named one of the top ten independent films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, as well as earning six nominations at the BAFTA Awards, including Outstanding British Film.

This incredibly beauitiful and touching film totally resonated with me! As a gay man who has now, upon losing my Dad this past December, lost both my parents I was washed along with the film in copious pools of tears, everything about it touched me on such a profound level. I live in a country that isn"t my own and I also feel incredibly lonely at times and miss my parents so much. I had been waiting to see this incredible film since I first read about it and it didn"t disappoint, I disappeared within it and haven"t stopped thinking about it since I watched it. Andrew Scott is phenomenal!! As are all the cast, director, cinematographer, soundtrack... sublime perfection!!! ❤🏳‍🌈 - We are all strangers.

Cried throughout. As well as the remarkable Andrew Scott performance, I found Foy so so moving - the pain, the generational void, the effort to reach beyond. For anyone who has suffered childhood trauma this film is a gorgeous wound with a yearning at its centre which many will identify with. Andrew Haigh is masterful in adding those layers of queer identity, shame and our desire to be seen and known by those we love. Definitely recommend Petit Maman to anyone who likes this film, a similar conceit and an equally searingly moving drama.

I thought, on reflection, that they were all dead - the apartments the holding area for people to reconcile with their past and learn the power of love. Once they has achieved this, they both became stars in the universe. Excellent cinema, doing everything that the artform strives to accomplish.

I thoroughly agree with you. Everyone is a ghost, who need to resolve issues, before they can pass over successfully. Adam and Harry's ghosts finally find love and become a star, in the night sky. Together, forever.

Love Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal as Actors. ❤ I’m going to see this, this weekend coming. I can’t wait, even though I know it’s going to be quite an Emotional Film. 😭 And I think, it will hit me, as a Parent. As my Beautiful Gay Son came out to me very early in life . He was 13, he is now 23. And all I did as his Mother, was Embrace it and show him my Love and Support. I can’t imagine anyone coming out in the 80’s or earlier. It must of been so difficult for them. My Heart Breaks. I’m so glad that Films like this, are being Made now. Thanks to you both for such a Wonderful Review. 😘😘

I saw this as part of the BFI film festival with my son and we both found this deeply emotional … I sobbed through parts of the film and cried when I came out. The film was so beautiful, the way it portrays family relationships and everyone in the audience takes different aspects of that away from the film. I also thought in the first scene with Jamie Bell was a cottaging scene! I loved how they give the audience the time and credit to find there way through the story and not point everything out . I have recently lost both of my parents and the scenes of Christmas in the 80s hit me hard!! I loved this film and am looking forward to watching it again and getting more from it I’m sure. A definite hit from me xx

I loved it. Saw it this evening. Such a gentleness, a sadness, a love for all characters involved. Always proud to see Irish actors being brilliant. Andrew Scott is amazingly natural. Paul Mescal is amazing as well. Such a complex character. This film will stay with me.

I went to see this masterpiece today. I cried quite a bit. Being a Croydon girl born and bred I was so happy to hear Croydon being mentioned even when they said about his mum being in St Mary's Hospital, this is where I was born. I was trying to make out where they were eating in Croydon when the mum and dad were saying goodbye, I think it might have been the pub near the car park or it could have been the ponderosa ( Blast from the past ) Love Love Love This film ❤❤❤

Agonisingly beautiful. Exquisite nuance and multifaceted heartache. Stunning. I was in tears, having lost both parents. Came straight to this review after watching the film. I read somewhere (and I hope it’s true) that in the book the fantasy starts after meeting Pauls character for the first time. And I’m holding onto that idea cause I don’t want the idea that Paul died. I’d much rather them having not ever met, but the scene at the end of Paul in his softest and most vulnerable state in bed with Andrew shattered my souls into a hundred pieces.

Just saw this very beautiful and bleak film. I was hoping beyond all hope that Paul Mescal's character would turn out to be real, but I too think he was a wish, a hope, a dream. So lonely, so sad. It was a very moving film.

I really do believe the building had tenants, he just didn't "see" them because he was lonely, isolated, depressed and didn't connect with anyone. Adam is, in a certain way, an unreliable narrator.

An absolute travesty this film and Andrew Scott weren’t nominated for any Oscars. Scott’s acting is so nuanced like you said - he draws you into his loneliness and grief, and I’m not sure many actors could have pulled this off. Towards the end, my heart was racing, I was so absorbed by the story. It is so sad the way the film touches on not just homophobia, but the sexism the protagonist and countless others have endured by the older generations. How sitting with his legs crossed was so shameful and he still takes it with him. One of the best films I’ve seen for a long time. Mescal was a complete natural, too. How could you not be moved by this film? The ending gave me goosebumps with ‘the power of love’ playing. Will definitely be rewatching this as I’m guessing there are little parts that will make more sense on another view.

Best film i have seen in years, its such a shame it wasnt up for awards, id literally watch andrew scott in anything, this film completely destroyed me for days my son nearly had to carry me from cinema i was crying so bad and he wasnt in great shape himself, a person would have to have a heart like a swinging brick not to be moved by this film

Really enjoyed listening to your thoughts. I loved this film, and as a gay man dealing with feelings of isolation and loneliness, it was terrifying. It held up a dark mirror and I was unwell for a couple of days after having seen it. Personally, I really dislike the twist of Paul's character at the end. I felt really seen by Andrew's character, and after seeing him go through a journey of healing, having his love being ripped away at the end after finally being ready to open up left me feeling hopeless and bitter. Even though the movie ends with Andrew's character having grown from the experience, it felt cruel to me. Hearing what you said about it being a dream or fantasy of Adam's the whole way through makes me appreciate it more though. I would've preferred it if Harry was imagined the whole time or just real. But having him actually die after being rejected that first night gives me the impression that sometimes, it IS too late, and you won't have the opportunity to make amends or move on to something happier (which is the opposite of the film's thesis, in my opinion). Regardless, I found everything else to be perfect. It's a beautiful film, and Andrew Scott was unfairly snubbed at the big awards. A shame.
