A case of the coup detat leader being couped himself then. Because if I remember rightly, Theresa May in 2017 held an election won the most seats, but lost her majority, so worked with the DUP as a govt. Interestingly the Wiki page says all these red wall seat won by Boris in 2019, she actually increased the Con vote a lot in all of them, with the votes coming from Brexit voting Lab supporters, so it was a trend that was rising anyway, which increased a lot 2 years later. Boris Johnson, who she made Foreign Secretary in 2016, then resigned from her government and this began the coup against her and she was deposed. She didn't have to have an election in 2017 and could have waited until 2020 under the 5 year fixed term parliament act. Perhaps we would have ended up with a softer Brexit, that would be better than the crazy prison island one we have now, and perhaps the election might have had to be delayed by a year due to the pandemic, and if she had managed it well, prob most likely, she might have then won a small majority in 2020, and everything now would be calm, with a govt focusing on the NHS etc instead we've got the constant never ending Boris drama.

She seems to misunderstand how the UK parliamentary democracy works. At some point the government whips could not force enough MPs to not express their no-confidence in the DePfeffel. What I am more worried about is that the next PM is going to be the fifth PM - four of them Tories - to come to power without an electoral mandate. And an incumbent PM and the supporting party is always at an advantage in a general election. The UK really needs to free itself of the feudal privileges and a written constitution. It cannot continue on a set of gentlemen's agreements assembled over the last 400 years.
