nadishana.com/ This is WATER UDU, and the technique of playing on it is hybrid: not only drumming, but also blowing inside it.

@damics1969 Yes, i added water myself. The Meinl model with the water appeared on their store some months after i posted this video to the Meinl website.

I get the feeling that before this was a musical instrument, someone just went to town on a vase and was like, hey, this is fun 🤣
@laur-unstagenameactuallyca15873 жыл бұрын
hahahaha it's from my culture. I am half Nigerian, this is from South Nigeria - Igbo tribe. funny enough, even though you said it as a a joke, udu was made from calabash gourds which are traditionally used to store water like vases 😂 so you're correct! someone in olden times really did take a vase and thought "hm this looks fun haha"

@nadishana This instrument sounds so good. I'm mesmerized by the depth of the bass and the dynamic that water provides. Congratz from Brazil.

So as a person who enjoys music and rythms... What can I say? This sounds like backgroundmusic, a soundtrack for a movie. Is it good? With some context, sure. I'm probably not going to listen to this twice though. I don't have time for this.

Pretty sure that was "jingle bells," or maybe it's just December. Love the way he coaxes ALL the songs DNS from his instruments. Never really considered treating my udu like a flute ;)

@AEdrums this effect is kind of hard to achieve, really depends on particular venue, boxes and soundtech, not really on the water.

@jeffwillet238714 жыл бұрын
there's so much sustain to the tone! does the water account for that? Great playing as always!

I've heard that the Countryman Isomax 2 mic works well as an internal mic for Udu, but when I went to the website, there are 3 choices, cardioid, hyper-cardioid and omni-directional. Would omni-directional be the best choice for this internal mic? I'd be very grateful for your feedback regarding this ... I even asked ChatGPT 4 Ai and suggested omni-directional might work best in home studio where there's not a lot of background noise ... but it is just Ai that relies on online data ... as a musician you would have a much better idea whether there might be feedback or other issues, whether cardioid might be a better choice ... :-)

where do you put the mic? the udu is obviously a rather quiet instrument so proper micing is key
@damics196914 жыл бұрын
Did you put water in it yourself ? because that's not the Meinl model with the water, it's the Meinl Fiberglass Tri ibo drum model # ID3G0. I know because i bought the same one. The Fiberglass Liquid one is the ID9bk/WH and has a black and white faded finish. Sounds great none the less but it's not the liquid model, you must have added the water to it...am i right ?

@nadishana Omnidirectional mic? By the way, i'm a fan of your work, here in Portugal!
@gregdei14 жыл бұрын
Hi Nadishana, I also have the ID3GO. Please tell me, don't you have trouble with the rawhide, too? Mine is lways loosing it's tension. There is no way to hit it without detuning it sooner or later! I tried a lot of different (leather)cords to keep it fixed. How is yours fixed? Greetings from Germany greg
@jamesfquinn15 жыл бұрын
Nice work! I thought of adding water to this drum awhile back, and even posted the idea on the Meinl website a few years ago. One question: Do you have a way to avoid having the water's humidity detune the rawhide head?
@ChrisDeJuanMusic12 жыл бұрын
Amazing...thanks do much for sharing your art!! How do you get that sustained low sound!? Are you using and internal mic? Thanks again. With love x

A common udu usually made by burned clay which could adsob the water and this can change its sound permanently. So I'm curious how this working? It's a special udu, or it coated with some waterproof material?
