A crucial difference between Carnatic and Hindustani classical music is in the role of the text. In Carnatic, the text is nearly always substantial and pithy. In Hindustani, on the other hand, the text can be minimal, full of suggestions and innuendos. Much is left to the imagination of the "rasika" and the interpretation of the vocalist. The artistic creation is participatory, almost like a dialogue. It is for the singer to fill in what remains unsaid in the text and nudge the rasika's imagination to conjure up hitherto unseen visions and rise to unknown heights. This is very lucidly illustrated in this piece. It consists of just two cryptic lines filled with innuendos, conjuring up imagery of lovers separated by a turbulent river, in the middle of the night. The rest is left to the imagination of the singer and her audience. Both the singer and the music composer have done a remarkable job of filling in the thumbnail sketch of the text and breathing life into it. One almost feels the palpable agony in the heartbeats of the lover separated from her beloved by an inimical river.

Well said. Moreover, we have an emotional attachment with Purabia Thumris. For, that one has to get into the dearth of ecstasy of haveli environment, that goes into the depths of nights, when Saiyya do not return... Saajan, Sajni, Saiyaa... All get a new colour and flavour.... That is the real beauty of Thumri... Purabia language and style has a spice... When the daughter Unnikrishnan renders, we expect more. Thumris, in fusion also, the original splendor is kept alive.

This is as good as it ever gets! "Nadiya" is beautifully articulated and charmingly presented with a lot of emotion and sensitivity. It's an awesome debut for Uthara Unnikrishnan into the world of Hindustani classical music. Looking forward to many, many more.
