Tom Morello is a good soul. Most magicians would never reveal their tricks, and would hoard them for their own personal prominence. Tom shares his tips and tricks with the world. He is by definition, altruistic, and concerned with the success of humanity. His ego is not in the way. This is made evident by the fact that he will reveal everything that he knows, knowing that someone may potentially emulate and surpass him; yet he appears to be excited about this. God bless you Tom Morello! We need a society of people like you. Thank you for making the world a better place...

Dre was a huge influence on me too, mostly for drinking 40’s and smoking blunts in HS. You really don’t here it on the first album but becomes apparent on the Evil Empire record. Trying to mimic the Loced (long O) out Compton synth lines of tracks like ‘Nuthin but a G thang’. And of course the scratching which is creative but they just shoulda got a DJ lol.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it but I'm only just now learning "Killing in the Name Of." I've been playing guitar since 1972 but due to health issues I kinda quit for about 15 years, it's hard to play when your arms ache horribly all the time because a bunch of neck muscles had to be cut off due to cancer. NOT A SMOKER. (I only explain that because of the derision I have always laid upon musicians who "just quit.") The other day I was watching the "Final Black Sabbath Concert" on TV and the next morning I got up with an unendurable itch to play my fucking guitar! Now I'm learning this song, thanks to youtube even someone who is mostly deaf (even with the most powerful hearing aids made) can learn a song with patience. It has taken me about 45- 50 minutes to learn this and man am I having FUN!!! Oh My God is this song fun to play! Reminds me of playing Paranoid or 2112 the first time! Thanks Tom for the insight! Now I'm back to my Axes, I think they missed me!

Agree. That is so much more subversive than the usual rocker/artist look- tats, piercings, long hair... the uniform. Tom is a great example of that. I like Future Islands as well because their lead singer is so passionate but looks likes like any other balding middle aged guy in chinos. To me, Morrissey is another subversive artist that isn't in a box. Mac Demarco is one. Not that there's anything wrong with guys who just prefer that look, but what was once alternative has become pretty status quo.

One of my favorite things about Tom Morello is that he writes such simple to play but groovy and brilliant riffs. Like, short of his scratching and toggle switch stuff MOST of RATM's catalog can be learned within a year of picking up a guitar. That being said, you might not play it with the same energy and groove for years after, but it really makes you feel like a rock star playing bulls on parade for the first time in your bed room when you're 13. Brilliant and truly inspirational

The most interesting thing I've ever heard about Tom is that he "saved" metal. I don't really believe this but when you do think about it, he did sort of come to be during the time all sort's of other new modern genre's of music were coming out or just rising to popularity like funk, pop, rap, etc. And Rage Against the Machine does sound a teeny bit like a thrash rap group. So the thing goes, people finally saw them in concert and basically said, "Wow, this is a rock band ... not a rap group, maybe rock isn't that bad."

On some of his guitars he has it installed to kill the whole signal, so the switch tells the guitar to use wire that doesn't actually go to a pickup, killing the sound when the switch is in the up position. On some of his other guitars (like the les paul in this video) there are two volume knobs, so he sets the neck pickup volume to zero, and the bridge pickup to ten. This achieves the same effect.

First.....As long as you don't include Page, Townsend, Howe, Gilmour, Santana, Gibbons, May, Lifeson, Van Halen, Frusciante, Osbourne, and Cobain.

Cooper Pearce I was wondering what he said there and I wasn’t sure if that was a RATM song. Thanks for the clarification.

@@williamhorn411 he tried to use that riff in ratm but zach couldn't really do anything with it so he put it on the shelf.

Tom is humble and seems happy to give online lessons. Great guitarist although I'll never play like him.

He knows music theory! talking about "octaves" and "dissonance" Tom Morello is freaking brilliant.....so intelligent and a guitar extraordinaire! He's a genius...seriously!! I really respect him!!! Wow he uses a Classical Guitar "nylon stringed" to write songs! He's impressive!!

Yeah!!! for once someone acknowledges that there is a lot of learning and significant degree of learning to be great guitarist in a time when average metal thrashers are so revered by their followers who cheer them on while they play high distortion feed backed three chord rampages over and over again. Its not music, its highly amplified "noise"

OMG!!! OCTAVES!!!! DISSONANCE!!!! HUGE THEORY KNOWLEDGE.
@Justanotherguy4310 жыл бұрын
lol he doesn't know a lot about theory. He said he tried studying it for a while and then he stopped because he found it useless. He found out a lot of things naturally through just playing. Great guitarists dont dig their heads in books to study how to play an instrument, they just play the damn instrument and find their way with it

All that with a guitar. That’s crazy. Inspiring, thanks. I listen to ratm but I didn’t know some of what I was hearing is also done on the electric guitar.

New respect for you Tom. Silly to say, but I figured you to be an effects guy that pulled riffs out of pedals, but when you demonstrated the fast triplet runs, I realized you could hold your own against Vai or Yngwie if the contest was about speed. Very, very impressed.

he is capable to shred. "Take the Power Back" , "Know Your Enemy" , and "Doesn't Remind Me" are some great examples that he is capaple of "shredding"

All Guitar Greats have a instantly recognizable Tonal palette.....Music is perfect avenue for expression of thoughts & emotions where techniques & gears are just the tools used....
