As we drive into Nafplio, located in the picturesque region of Argolidas, we are immediately captivated by its beauty. Our first stop is the iconic Nafplio Castle, a magnificent fortress boasting breathtaking views. We share intriguing stories about the castle's 999 steps, although the actual count is 857-an interesting local legend worth unravelling.
After working up an appetite, we indulge in the diverse culinary scene of Nafplio. From the authentic flavours of the Gyro House to the tantalizing Lebanese dishes at Mandaloon, and the unique fusion of Italian and Mexican cuisines at Alpha, we savour every bite and recommend these eateries for an unforgettable lunch experience.
Exploring the city centre, we discover hidden gems tucked away in side alleys. Charming boutique shops, cosy cafes, and quaint restaurants create an enchanting atmosphere that transports us to a bygone era. We encourage you to venture off the main streets and immerse yourself in the local culture and charm of these lesser-known areas.
Nafplio's central square is bustling with activity, and we visit the local museum, allowing us to delve deeper into the town's fascinating history. From there, we make our way to the enchanting Bourtzi Castle, situated on a small island just off the harbour. We learn about its historical significance in protecting the town from invaders and marvel at its picturesque setting.
Our journey continues to Palamidi Castle, perched high on a hill, offering panoramic views of the town and the sea. As we descend, we reach Nafplio Beach, a delightful spot to relax and soak in crystal-clear waters without the hassle of sandy beaches.
We also explore Hotel Amalia, one of the most renowned accommodations in Nafplio. Its inviting ambience and excellent amenities make it a popular choice for visitors seeking comfort and convenience.
To enhance your Nafplio experience, we recommend catching a movie at Cine Nafplio, a cool cinema showcasing the latest releases in a unique setting. It's a fantastic way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Hi John! No, most of them will be open. April is really nice. Be aware things may be crazy the first week as its greek easter, the bggest holiday of the year. mind you, it's also a mega fun time to be here!

There's a fantastic abandoned hotel on the hillside overlooking the sea and town that used to be a Xenia state run hotel. I stayed there in 1972 and it was really modern and chic (see the photos on line) and I am mystified why it's just in the state now! Tip: don't eat donar kebabs in Nafplio. PS I came on train in 1972. It was great with lamb shish kebabs cooked on the platform sold by kids running up to the train windows at the frequent stops to Corinth and Athens. Again... why is it fell into ruin now? David 😮

Yes, there are several abandoned hotels along this stretch of coast. The one in nafplion is quite cool. Apparently, they closed due to a combination of the financial crisis and bad management, but this might be wrong for some of them. The railway to nafplio stopped due to underfunding by the government, according to some.

@@LivinginGreece I heard somewhere that the old single track Peloponnese railway might re-open eventually as an upto date tourist attraction. I definitely think the Nafplio Korinth section needs reinstating it was great fun!

yes , the track is mainly still there. I think the line is still used from Corinthos to Argos and on to Tripoli. The Argos to Nafplio line is still there but is overgrown and needs repairing. You can follow the route on the satellite photos on google maps.

Yes, it's difficult for us english to master greek pronunciation, so I'll try a bit harder. I am a bit confused with the last bit though, what has whose proper name?
