There aren't many things in this world that are the "absolute best" in the world. But for portable tape recorders, Nagra was the world's finest. Built like a fine Swiss watch, and designed for pros to make professional recordings. Gorgeous machinery !!

4.2 was better

You can see the "Nagra III" in the Brian De Palma Movie "Blow Out" (from 1981) with John Travolta ;) Its 1 of 3 favorites Movies from Quentin Tarantino and this is the reason why he cast Travolta for Pulp Fiction ! Greetings from Hamburg !

The Nagra III was made for film sync sound so it had to be accurate. These things were used for dialogue recording for several major motion pictures. It is perhaps one of the most accurate portable reel-to-reel recorders ever made, and also at the time the most expensive device of its kind in the world.
@kishascape2 жыл бұрын
Nah the 4.2 was more accurate and was able to pilot sync as well SMTPE time codes with an addon.

Great review. Learned some things that I did not know for the operation of this fine deck. Recently sold one in good condition. Funds needed for another project, wish I could have kept it.

lovely recorder ^^ if i have enough money one day i would like using that kind of stuff, but the problem is became harder to found new tape, what size of tape did you used in a device like that, same as master tape for ampex or revox stuff ?
@CharlyStone13 жыл бұрын
where are you from, I had one for sale for a low price
@kishascape2 жыл бұрын
You either get used sealed box tape off ebay, there plenty. OR get new fresh made tape from ATR magnetics or various other companies.

Thanks so much for posting this! I just spent the afternoon pondering how dialogue was recorded for films before the days of portable digital recorders. I now have my answer! Am I correct in assuming that most location sound for films was recorded using similar recorders to this one?

Hi can you tell me how headphones connection works? Is it one bananna plug for + and one - to feed a mono headphone? thanks
@belizando6 жыл бұрын
Lautaro Papagno yes, banana plugs for mono headphones top jack is + , or "tip" bottom jack is "sleeve" or negative. It's easy to build an adaptor for a pair of stereo headphones using banana plugs and a quarter-inch stereo jack.
@XXLAUTAROXX6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I knew the adaptor I received was a total frankenstein ( Tip and Sleeve from each channel soldered to each bannana) hahaaaa no comments.

Do you know that name "Nagra" comes from polish word "nagrać" means "to record". "To urządzenie nagra dźwięk" means in english "This device will record sound"

What are the two switches in the middle of the front panel between the record playback control and the mic level knob? On mine it says B-A on the top switch and the bottom switch is 3 position. They are not shown in the manual supplied with the my Nargra 111

Would it be blasphemy to take an analog field recorder with busted mechanics, and replace them with a high quality DAC?
