I think what we're hearing is mostly those relatively dinky microphones ..try recording some piano on a Manley Gold , or something like that ! btw flutter is given as .05% , Im not sure at what speed that is . ..and freq. response is (something) up to 15k + - 2 db .

I still worked in the mid nineties with a mono version of the nagra sn in a film production company. We had a special connector for our field mixer SQN-3 M that mounts the nagra direct on the sound mixer. With this unit we where able to record sound only independent from the BetacamSP in relativ high quality. I love this device and all the other stuff from Mr. Kudelski

Its amazing how much of a disconnect there is in monophonic recording...i tend to think "All those people are dead now.." but in stereo, everything comes to life. They had a single groove disc recording in the 1930s and it feels like they could have been alive in my time.

It… _sounds_ like the 1960s. Maybe it’s coincidence, But I think it’s got to do with the recording technology of the time. Listening to your recording, it had a quality (which I lack the vocabulary for, being a neophyte re: audio) heavily reminiscent of listening to, say, recordings of JFK or Nixon and other interviews from those decades. It just felt the same. Cool.

What's with all the reverb in the direct feed output? Is the SNST playback unit actually a DSP and generating that (perhaps something to do with the right/left "expansion" knob/switch)? The level of reverb was like you were yelling in an empty church.

How wide is the tape on this machine? It looks wider than a cassette but narrower than quarter inch reel to reel.
@Pheorize
@Pheorize 2 жыл бұрын
It's the same width as a compact cassette, 3.81 mm, or as it's more commonly known, ⅛ inch (sort of, it's actually a tiny bit wider apparently, 0.15 inch instead of 0.125 inch).

@Pheorize
@Pheorize 2 жыл бұрын
@@bdwatkins2001 Hehe, yeah, I had a hard time guessing what size the whole machine was at first too, but when he held it in his hand the perspective got a bit better. But I still think it looks larger than what it is, mostly due to the great quality of the recorder, something you can tell just from looking at it. Also, you're usually more used to seeing R2R:s being quite large, at least the size of a type writer, so I think that skews the perspective quite a bit as well.

I am sorry. You do not know your right from your left. You have it backwards! That recorder is running backwards. Running backwards, through time. To show you how Awesome this,, CIA Recorder was. Jumped down a few years later. In the early 1970s. I am now a Freelance Audio Engineer.. For, Film and Video Productions. And I get hired on for a Film. With the Maryland State Police. Cool. And I am presented with a, Negra IV, single-channel mono, recorder. In this one scene. In the deep of the frigid winter. Which it was. On, I-695 the Baltimore Beltway. And I am sitting behind a semi tractor-trailer driver. In a brand-new Kenworth Tractor. And the scene went great. It's now time for me to get out of the Kenworth, cab. With the, Negra IV. And my microphone cable gets hung up on the door. And I go falling, 6 feet to the ground. Right on top of the, Negra IV.. Well this thing is terribly bent up now. It will be unusable. We cannot get another one. We've got all these actors and pulleys and cars and equipment. On location. And no replacement recorder. Ugh! So! I become, Scotty.. From Star Trek! I had a hammer. I get a pliers. And I start banging the, folded Dent out of the deck plate. Banging it flat. Twisting and bending it with my hands. And then I load up some recording tape. And press the go button. Press record. And… IT'S WORKING! I MADE IT WORK AGAIN! It still looks terribly bent and creased. All over the deck plate. It looks like a truck ran over it. But no. I fell on top of it. Without any broken bones. And not even a broken Negra. Just amazing Equipment! You should've seen the phases. On the guys at the Rental House. When I returned, the rented recorder. I said it fell down. They had a good laugh over it. They were amazed how well it was still working. So was I. I can't believe I got through the rest of the day with that. And it continued to work. The tape played back and sounded fine. I don't know how far out the head alignment was? I don't have to worry about that. They do. They will compensate for that. But the quality of that workmanship, shines through. That was really something. I was beyond impressed. No wonder they became the standard of the industry. I started off using a, Negra III.. And I thought that was nice. But that newer Naga IV was something else. And this miniature thing. Was a technological marvel! Where do you think the compact cassette came from? They had all of this tape laying around. What are we going to do with all of this tape they wondered? They stuck it inside little plastic cassettes. It's the same tape. But sounded even better. Because it was, for track or half track stereo. Tracks twice as wide as a compact cassette. Because you can't turn it over and record on the other side. So you get twice the quality of sound. They were absolutely amazing. Many great and famous, Bootleg Recordings. Were made with those miniature versions. I'm one of those people. Who actually made. Those kinds of, unofficially sanctioned, archived, recordings. I was never directly asked, to make. No. I would simply get a call. Somebody telling me… Some show was playing at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. And they had a couple of leftover tickets and wondered if I wanted them? Why sure! Always 3 tickets. Always. That way. There would be nobody sitting directly to my left or, directly to my right. To disturb me or the recording, nobody knew I was making. I was wired for sound. You could see nothing. I was in my Tuxedo. And I impersonated. A German, rubber dummy head. Better than the German dummy head! Because unlike the dummy head. I did not say anything. Because I would think. Even a German dummy had made out of rubber. Might say something.. But I would not. I was making an official, unofficial, bootleg archive recording. Because somebody had to do it. For later, Fund Raising,, purposes. When they didn't get the proper account from the union musicians. To allow for an archival recording. That's when I would get free tickets to the show. Later I would drop by their offices. To thank them for those tickets to the show. And I would just happened to drop off a copy of it for them. Which I thought they would like. Nothing was ever discussed. I made some lovely recordings that way. Better than the German-made rubber dummy head. As I looked more interested. And I know how to play the part of a dummy head, just fine. I don't need any direction from you. And how did I do that? Without anybody knowing? I had a pair of Sennheiser, MKE-2.. Modular, micro-miniature, lavalier microphones. Each one less than the circumference of your ear, canal. I would drape one over each one of my ears. Placing them within my, external ear flaps. Running the cables down the back of my neck. And into the pocket of my tuxedo pants. Originally into a stereo, AIAWA, analog cassette recorder. Later replaced with a, Denon,, miniature DAT, Digital Recorder. And I was wired for sound. I could record chitchat and conversations. The action going on in the bathrooms. And sometimes I included those on the recordings. Always good for a laugh. You need a little comedy. Easily obtained, that way. With tapes that would run, 2 contiguous hours long. That was a big deal back in the, early 1990s. And starting back in the early 1980s. When I went, Digital Recording in, 1983. Yes, 41 years ago. I then had. Way back then. The world's first and only. 2 wheel. 2 track Digital. Remote recording facility in the world! Yes! I would show up at a church. I was contracted. To make a recording on a Sunday morning. Downtown Washington DC. Where parking is near impossible. So a motorcycle was needed. And I would pack. 200 feet of microphone cable. 2, collapsible aluminum telescoping, 12 foot tall microphone stands. A portable,, VHS Video Recorder. With AC power supply. And a Sony, PCM-F1, Digital Converter. Bigger than the VHS, recorder. And heavier. And a pair of headphones. And a pair of high quality studio microphones. And I would show up to church. And they would get pissed-off. Why are you pissed-off? I would ask. They said… We thought you were coming into make a recording?! I am. I'm here. But you're on your motorcycle! Yes and it will take me 10 minutes to set up. They couldn't believe all the gear I was taking off the motorcycle. You couldn't see any of it. I just had a couple of soft bags. With bungee cords. And I set up all this equipment. And these really tall microphone stands. Everybody thought I was the bees knees! Ouch! Later. At Abraham Lincoln's, Church. They asked me to go to work directly for them. They said they needed me. On Sunday mornings!? Yes. You have to open the church at 8 AM. Get everything set up for the first service at 9 AM. And reset for the service at 11 AM. Then put everything away. And lock everything up. I said okey-dokey then. It was Abraham Lincoln's church. What an honor! Thankfully though. It was after, Bill and Hillary Clinton. Had left public office. Because Hillary was a Methodist. Bill was a Baptist. And every other week. They would be at every other church. Baptist, Methodist, Baptist, Methodist. And I was told. It was very disruptive when Hillary and Bill attended. And things had gotten back to, normal. Without the incessant loud protests, outside the church. Yes… Thank God. And they knew. The senior pastor knew. Who asked me to go to work for them. That I was an atheist. But I really liked, the senior pastors, sermons. And I had to hear them twice on Sundays. They were really good. I really liked working for the Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington DC. I worked for them for nearly 2 years. I made a difference for them they needed, badly. I upgraded everything. And later trained a new volunteer. The old guy just couldn't cut it anymore. No, Ben. We cut CDs now for the parishioners. They only take 2 minutes to copy. You don't have to wait 40 minutes for the cassette. But Ben, didn't know any other way. And couldn't work the, computer. And I had made it so easy. So goof proof. It did not matter. Johnny would replace him. And he was only 16. And ready to roll. Looking forward to the evening music concerts. Because they did have some rock bands occasionally. Otherwise it was symphonic. And many were Broadcast on the Good Music Station for Washington DC, WGMS-103.5 FM. A truly wonderful station. And I was working over at NBC. They were a sister station to ours. And I knew most of the people over there. And they would come in for the Broadcast. Howdy folks. Always great working alongside other professionals. And a lovely experience. To be working for Abraham Lincoln's church. What an honor. Even for an atheist. They don't get much better Christian than that. They are the real deal. No fakes amongst them. I enjoyed the experience. I found it quite fulfilling. It opened my eyes. Early on Sunday mornings. I never got up that early for anybody. Not even NBC. Unless they forced me. But this was different. So I'm not against religion nor Christianity. I'm certainly not against Christians. I'm against Nazis, Fascists and the Ku Klux Klan. So are they. So I can't be all wrong. They know nefarious bag actors when they come upon them. And they will, ferociously defend our country. From any hostilities both foreign and domestic. It's what we are all about as Americans. We come together. Others want to split apart. Let them go. Let them leave. They should leave now. Leave while they are still breathing. With the grace of God. Leave! Vote Joe Biden in November. The worst that could happen? We could get Kamala Harris. That would be OK. RemyRAD
