Awesome! I just purchased one of these for my GSD/Siberian Husky boy and am excited to get him working on it! He haaates having his paws messed with at all. We've worked on him with it, but we adopted him from a shelter and knew he was badly neglected/abused and just getting him comfortable to be around us has taken a long time. Earlier this year he caught one of his too long nails on something on the park and ripped it. We took him to the vet and $600+ later, he was all patched up and had trimmed nails again, but man, those suckers grew out so fast! He's also so smart and has gotten bored with the many tricks he has already mastered so this will be great, i think!

OH gosh, I just got our Beagle to use the scratchboard for his font paws it has been so nice for both him and me, no more stress. He has been growing more and more anxious about nail trims to the point where the vet was prescribing medication to help calm him. Thank you for this video, I'm definitely going to try this with him to work on those back ones.

I have a bull terrier/hound (at least that is our best guess as he was found as a stray). He will not even let me touch his feet, so using a scratch pad has really helped with the front nails, thanks for this video so I can start trying to get him to file the back.

I have a yorkie and I'm going to give this a try. We've been using the Scratch Pad for front paws for years and going to the vet for frequent nail trims. Their price just jumped to $45 and they usually can't even do all of her nails because she's difficult. If this will work it will be a lifesaver. So far she'll put her paws up on the step stool, but with the scratch pad in front she won't put her paws over it.

I taught my dog to do a high-five which is pretty easy then I just took the board food some sandpaper on it and I had him do a high five on it and it worked out really good and it's fast but right now I haven't done his hind legs but I'll get to that it'll take a little time

The dogs are coordinated and have really good rear awareness. LOL however, it's me being able to click entry at the right times while I'm making sure the board doesn't fall over. They are very excited to do nails so it makes it hard to keep the board sturdy.

I have a rat terrier mix puppy and an older terrier mix. Both dogs love filing their front nails, but I had issues with them climbing over the scratchboard when I tried to do their rear feet. I’m thinking if I lean the board against a stool instead of the couch it would prevent this. Thanks!

I trim my 8(9 months on the 6th) month old aussie's nail the old fashioned way and she let's me. I trained her early. I've never had any issues training my dogs to get their nails cut at home. However, they do stay sharp even after I cut them, and I can't cut them any shorter or else I'll make her bleed. So I'm thinking about getting something like this.

I have a very training averse chi-pap who can do anything if we’re playing, nothing if he’s supposed to perform (rescue so no idea of past) - he’s not really my problem child. I have a mini doxie who’s just not built to do this, front paws she’s okay with upright on her hind legs like a cat, but was hoping you had a technique for her to scratch one-two with the back on a flattish board as I just can’t see her doing this. She’s very strong, also quite bandy legged in the back so can’t use those muscles in a forward motion well. She hops with those back legs to run, looks like bunny with floppy ears! Plus has to be nearly flat to be able to hold herself on her front legs. She kinda has to fall down & flop up any stair over a couple inches! Have you worked on this technique with a long bodied, short legged breed?
@CanineCountryAcademy
@CanineCountryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. Does your Doxie scratch her back paws outside ever? It's pretty tricky to teach a flat scratch if they don't offer it other times so you can capture that moment.

really cool my girl is really easy just to cut her nails, but i like the idea of her filing them even closer herself, she is 37%grey wolf 17%malmute 15%chow 13%collie 12%german shepherd husky 6%boston terrier.......and smart as a whip she can hide right in front of you and you wont see her in the bushes.

I found your post about making and using a scratch board to care for dogs nails. Our dog Luna is 3 years old and hates nail care, to the point where we have to give her sedatives to use a dremel on her nails. It’s not sustainable. So that’s where I found your post about scratch boards. I made one, but I can’t figure out how to get our dog to start pawing at it. She just starts at me and the cheese in my hand. Any advice? Thanks!

there are other trainers who start with a tasty treat under a towel. As soon as they paw at the towel to get to the treat, reward that. Reward that pawing and scratching lavishly, then substitute a scratch board.
