I've seen the comments piling up saying this is not soca and that this song is american. What exactly makes the song american? what a few words referencing grills? if you Di-sect the song you have the african beat; you got the indian octave of singing; you got one of the most original use of the most basic of pan beats as a hook in a song and a vocal nod in the outro as a nod to the pan teacher; this tune is a clear nod to the roots of the soca visually and lyrically with the actual use of pan in the mix so what more do people want? To top it off the tune sounds great...so Yes Sokah is soca, not american urban pop/hip-hop, if it were that you would not even be able to understand the words much less have enough cultural references for youth to want to look up who is Lord Shorty.

I ain't that old and I remember when Machel pushed the bounds of soca mid 1990's (e.g. Give Yourself, UFO) before his short retirement; alot of people then were saying he was not making soca but here we are a little more than 10 years later with machel officially known as the best soca artiste of a generation and now we have a new artista pushing the bounds of soca singing soKah! Lets not forget the purpose of soca is to bring it all together and who better than someone with soca in her veins. If I have any concerns is whether her vocal chords could handle singing in that high octave a whole carnival season if the song blows up.

Another instant soca hit here from Nailah! I am also loving the steelpan element in this song featuring Boogsie Sharpe. I know Boogsie loves to go with his own compositions for Panorama but I reckon Phase II can win Panorama next year for sure if they play this song which is guaranteed to be very popular with everyone come T&T Carnival 2018 next year! Panorama is missing the good old days when the songs played by most of the bands in the Panorama Finals were also the most popular songs in the Soca/Carnival fetes and we need to get back to those days if Panorama wants to draw sellout crowds again at the Panorama Finals! Just heard the news that Phase II Pan Groove will be going with "SOKAH" by Nailah Blackman for Panorama 2018! :-) I think Boogsie moving smart as he wants everyone to know his band's panorama tune very well come the finals so they can fully appreciate his arrangement. I think Phase II Pan Groove could be hot favorites to take the Panorama title for 2018 so them other bands better come real good or else licks sharing! ;-) Congrats to Nailah Blackman and the producer Anson Pro on having their tune selected by one of the top T&T steelbands for Panorama 2018! I just checked and all Nailah's releases so far are hits and she either wrote or was the main person involved in writing all of them. Nailah already has 3 back-to-back soca hits so far with well over million KZbin views. In fact her first hit "Work Out" released less than a year ago now has approaching 7 millions KZbin views; "Baila Mami" has approaching 5 million KZbin views and was released in late April this year; "Badishh" released in 2nd half of August this year is currently on well over 2.5 million KZbin views; This latest release "SOKAH" is clocking over 25,000 KZbin views per day since its release this Tuesday which means at current rate this track will be near or passed 1 million KZbin views sometime between Christmas and New Year's Day.
