Yes - Police Squad! really deserves more attention - it's lovely :) There are some real must-watch movies of this style: Airplane (I & II), Top Secret, Hot Shots (I & II), UHF (underrated gem starring Weird Al!), Naked Gun, Kentucky Fried Movie. Plus the Mel Brooks and Monty Python classics of course - The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World Part I, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Life of Brian. You've reacted to a few of those already - the rest are worth a watch as well. Also - some of the funniest movies I've ever watched were the Marx Brothers classics. The wit of Groucho Marx is just as razor-sharp today as it was 90 years ago - and their musical talent is just astounding.

I think I like them all the same, but I kinda have a special connection to this one, since it was the only one I saw in theaters, and it has some of the best lines and jokes "Like a midget at a urinal, I had to stay on my feet" "Like a blind man at an orgy, I was going to have to feel things out", and some of the references are great. The whole beginning scene was a parody of the Untouchables, and obviously Shawshank Redemption and Thelma and Louse was in there too. Also, I love the whole Oscars ending, especially the scene where they all face palm.
@garethm3242
@garethm3242 Жыл бұрын
Since it was released the same year as Shawshank, and due to the "shower scene in prison" trope being a lot older than this, I reckon it was more influenced by films like "Escape from Alcatraz". Probably a direct reference to that film in fact :) [Edit] and the further prison references were to films like "The Great Escape", older escape films

As a dog walker who opens bags made of thin plastic every day to collect poop, I can tell you that you’re recommending an imperfect method for those produce bags at the grocery store. The trick is to tap your forefinger to the tip of your tongue, then rub your tongue and forefinger together and pull the bag open at the center. The slight amount of moisture gives you the necessary friction to open the bag. The “rub the top sides of the bag together” method creates static electricity that makes the bag try to close again.

Hi Kacee!🙂🎶Ding dong the witch is dead🎶😄The opening scene with the stairs and the baby carriage is a parody of "The Untouchables" (1987), Yep the films are based on the 1982 series "Police Squad!". The two ladies going on a road trip is from "Thelma & Louise" (1991). Raquel Welch was looking pretty fine in that metallic dress at the podium, R.I.P. She was 54 years old here. Pia Zadora (Blue dress on stage) was pretty popular around this time. I agree Kacee, the story was very cohesive, but the jokes were more subtle here. "Ghost" (1990) is a well made film, but it is not a comedy. Great reactions to your 33 and a third Naked Gun reaction, Kacee!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Fred Ward also co-starred in the Clint Eastwood film Escape from Alcatraz. It was about some prisoners who orchestrated a breakout from the most secure prison at the time. They were never found, and Unsolved Mysteries did a segment on the case in the 80s. Most people think they didn't make it, but how would we really know? I personally think at least one of the three men had to have gotten away.

The original show this series is based on is Police Squad seven years earlier. There were only six episodes produced. It had no laugh track and was decades ahead of its time. Leslie Nelson is closer to his age in airplane than The Naked Gun movies and is particularly dapper and inspired. All six episodes are stoned cold classics. That said, special mention must be said to the pilot episode which to this day is the single funniest 22 minute episode if television I've ever seen. It is sublime and the humor is timeless and plays as strong as it did in 1982. The writing is so groundbreaking in what now is copied to diminishing returns in all those parody films. I think you owe it to yourself to watch the first three episodes for your channel to see where the movies inspiration started from and was originally intended for. I adore the movies and Nelson, but he got more goofy and slapsticky for the movies. The television series he just played it stoic and straight as a dashing silver fox detective that was always in over his head and never knew it. He's brilliant and a revelation.

I agree that the first one is the best of the trilogy, but I love the hilarity in this third one. And IMHO the best 80's comedy film is the 1994 film, "Liar, Liar". And the best 20th century comedy film over all is, "Its A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963), tied with "Blazing Saddles" (1974). All the rest are mere runners up (but still super funny on their own). Also, the best TV comedy series is "Fawlty Towers" (1975, 1979).

Yeah, Police Squad is the series, if you think the movies are good, you will love the show, it is better and original, IMO, it started it all. Tho they use some of the same jokes. In this, the final one, it was made in 1994, A LOT happened in the 90s and this is littered with pop culture stuff and a bunch of cameos (especially the Oscars scene at the end), more than the previous, so you really had to be around back then the get them. Also, Ghost would most likely make you cry, it's a romance type story. Hot Shots you would enjoy, but it's also filled with movie references, such as Top Gun, Rambo, etc., but it's still one of the best comedies.

For me, I rank the movies 2, 1, 3. I feel like the first one set the ground work for the series, the second one went into just the right amount of absurdity, and the third one went kind of far over the top with it (though I still love it). Two moments that I see from this one that really stand out for me as classic gags are the dance number and the simultaneous head slap from the audience. As for the tv series Police Squad, it would be an excellent reaction, as I haven’t seen many people do reactions to it.

In the scene with the framed clothing honoring famous law enforcement, J. Edger Hoover was Director of the FBI from the 1920's until the 1960's. His frame had a frilly dress because he is rumored to have been gay. The framed clothes for Elliot Ness is because Elliot Ness was the Treasury agent who arrested Al Capone (played by Kevin Costner in "The Untouchables"). If you liked these movies, I would recommend National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon. It's a comedic parody in this style, filled with puns and silly gags and topical references of the time. And if you are only going to see one, the absolute best is A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (from 1935). Since nobody has told you, movie studios at this time were not thinking sequels. There's been the occasional few, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, the Star Wars prequels to name a few, but sequels only happened if the first movie was very successful and audiences had an interest for them. Because of that, sequels were very often years and years apart. Which meant that some of the people involved in the original, might not be available for the sequel, or not interested at all. That led to a lot of sequels to not have the same feel, or look, or energy as the original. Which also meant that timeline and storylines didn't have to link up. The only thing that a sequel needed was for a carryover character, hopefully the lead actor/actress, but not always. Some sequel even went into totally different direction. That's why sequels during this time really struggled when compared to the original. Aliens and Terminator 2 were, and still are the gold standard on how to make a successful sequel. Today movies all suffer the Marvel treatment, everything has to have a three movie sequel, and somehow link up story wise. This thinking has made a lot of sequels just as successful as the original because some actual thought can be had on what story to tell for the next movie. But it's also made a lot of copy and paste characters, stories, feeling, and looks.

10:20 - The suits up on the wall are from famous law enforcement figures, Wyatt Earp and his cowboy/marshal fit, Elliot Ness the prohibition agent/leader of the Untouchables who took down Al Capone, and J. Edgar Hoover, the first Director of the FBI. It's long been rumored that Hoover was a homosexual / cross dresser, hence his fairy outfit.

"Police Squad!" is worth a watch, though you'll have already seen/heard a good many of it's jokes. Between writing "Airplane!" and "Police Squad!" the writers also did a movie named "Top Secret!", which is the introductory movie of Val Kilmer. "Hot Shots!" is a great pair of movies in this same absurdist style. While Leslie Nielsen went on to do several more comedies, they were by other writers and directors and generally not as good. "Wrongfully Accused" is pretty good (imo), but you should watch "The Fugitive" (a 90s Harrison Ford action movie) first.

You should consider "Top Secret!". Its a ridiculous comedy similar to Naked Gun, and was actually the first movie Val Kilmer was in, and as the lead character no less!

The Jokes Explained. 9:01 “Do you have Spartacus?” Meaning the movie, also sounds like a disease, also the brand of the clock. 10:21 Eliot Ness was the prohibition officer who took down Al Capone; the first scene (with the babies, etc) is a parody of film The Untouchables which is about Eliot. J. Edgar Hoover was the original head of the FBI; it’s rumoured he liked to wear women’s clothing. 12:02 He’s trying to look his best for Frank because he’s planning to, um… **** him. 18:17 Rocco’s laughing like Beavis & Butthead. Also before the launch, because he was ill that day, Fred West redubbed his lines later which is why his words don’t move with his mouth. 22:06 Parodying The Crying Game. 24:28 Pahpshmir, the enemy from The Naked Gun (the Beirut mission and talking to Ludwig). The series you mentioned at the start was not Police Story (which is a Chinese movie) but called Police Squad! (which is why the subtitle is ‘From the files of Police Squad!’).
