Several years ago there were a lot of naked people but nowadays the reason why Formentera is so popular amongst naturists is not you'll find more naked people than in any other non-urban spanish beach, but because it has the most beautiful turquoise waters in spain, an amazing landscape and not as many tourists as the other islands. The conection with nature is stronger in Formentera. Totally worth it spending at least a day in Formentera if you are staying in Ibiza.

As soon as I heard you say secret island I wondered if you meant Formentera and you did. Brought back memories. Visited the island in 1977 on a boat trip. Boat pulled up on the beach and everyone was naked. My first experience of naturism at 20 years of age.

I have seen a lot of change in Formentera over 20 years. There used to be a lot more naked people, but as the island becomes more popular, then the swimming costumes dominate. It is also very popular with Italian tourists, who are very conservative with bodies.... few Italian women go to topless even there. However, it IS still possible to be happily naked on almost any beach on the island.

@@NakedWanderings yes, one small beach there Cala D'es Morts, at the far end of Mitjorn, I remember being 70-80 % nude 15 -20 years ago. When I went last year, it was 100% textile (and yes, again most visitors to the beach were Italian - probably from the large hotel a short walk away.).

The essence of Formentera is that it's an island about freedom, about being carefree, and for relaxation. Accordingly, it's ethos is as a clothing-optional island. You are free to choose to wear whatever you want, or wear nothing. You won't find a sign anywhere marking a "nudist beach" begins here or ends there. It’s an inclusive, warm, welcoming slice of heaven. Everyone co-exists with each other - and alongside each other - on the island’s beaches with mutual respect. You don’t need to drive to a specific carpark, walk through bushland, take a left turn at the sign, climb down a steep path etc to find a beach where you can feel free to be nude. That’s the difference to Ibiza. Formentera is 100 times more nude-friendly than Ibiza, in totality. We need to be very clear about that. (The only beach area that I wouldn't be naked on Formentera is the one in front of the Es Pujols hotels.) That's a very basic summary of the "vibe" you will find on the island. I felt that in your video you were searching hard to find a busy nudist beach with a specific lively community feel, vibe or buzz. It wouldn't matter whether you go to Formentera in June, July, August or September - you won't find that on Formentera in 2024. It's true that you did arrive on the island in a quiet time of the year (for sure, it does look quieter than I imagined for early-June). The island will get busier in coming months. For enjoyers of relaxing nudism, August is the arguably the WORST month to go, followed by July. In those two months, the island is overrun by visitor demographics that can really “stretch” the island’s relaxed nature. Let’s make a pact. Let's make SEPTEMBER the month for promoting the resurgence of nudism on Formentera......it also happens to be the month that I am on the island ;) There are a couple of areas where more nudists gather, on average, and in September I find these to be a really good time to visit. But even then, it’s not going to be a place with a clear “community vibe” where you’re cheek-to-cheek and engaging with other nudists.

@@NakedWanderings I deliberately avoid going there in August, but all my discussions indicate that the island does get pretty full in that month, and it loses a fair bit of its charm as a result. The popular "Instagram hotspots" will be cheek-to-cheek during peak season. I've been naked at them all!! And it's always me co-existing alongside the textiles. But I know that's something which isn't the preference of many (most) au naturale sunbathers. By the way, whoever it was on IG who told you to visit Migjorn Beach was really not giving you especially helpful information. Migjorn is typically the name given to most of the entire southern coast of Formentera - it's about five or six kilometres of various smaller beaches and coves - each with their own characteristics and their own name/nickname. The piece of Migjorn Beach that typically has the highest proportion of nudists is the one situated in front of "Vogamari" restaurant (a Google search will show its location), and also the mixture of coves further south-east in front of "La Fragata" restaurant (recommended for lunch!)

The Phoenicians and Greeks also knew about the nakedness of the islanders, the Greeks gave them the name “Gymnesai” (which means naked) and yes is the same origin of the word “Gym” Later they called them “Baleoros/Baleoroi” (Slingers, throne throwers)

Have you tried to contact the spanish couple "behind" youtube channel "la vida a vela"? They have sailed a lot around mediterrain sea and been on many nude beaches around coast line and islands. Maybe they can help you both on finding some of the best ones :)

Lovely island, first visited in the early 90s. Too many textiles in high season now days, but still possible to go nude. Best to visit in September or "claim" parts of the beach as naturist.

We wouldn't write off Formentera completely though :-) From what we hear, it was all because of the season. In May, Ibiza goes nude and Formentera is empty. From June on, Ibiza gets very textile and formentera becomes more nude

Keep in mind this video was filmed around mid-May, and that the island was just preparing the start of the season. Looking back at it now, we probably should have gone a couple of weeks later. If only someone had told us this... We actually had one Karen in our whole 7-year career of Naked Wanderings and it was during the first year. On an unofficial nude beach in Greece, a German woman walked up to us to complain about our nudity, saying that the police might show up and chase us away. We told her that we would solve this problem if it actually happened and just ignored her. When leaving the beach, we noticed that she was camping illegally. Which was probably the reason why she wanted to avoid police presence :-)
