That is so true! That is something we always heard back in the states, "why wouldn't you want to live in the US where it is safe?" and that is usually coming from people who have never left the US or have only travelled to places that are poorer for mission trips or something and it skews their view of "outside the US." Once we moved to Germany, it really gave us a new perspective on so much including this exact question. It is fascinating to see other perspectives here on the US. We also don't want to say we moved here because the US is bad, it is always going to be home!

Now I have lived in both countries and I have to say that only in Germany have I ever been attacked by Muslims. Literally attacked and shoved up against a wall. Luckily there were people around so nothing bad happened. in Germany and Austria I have also been bothered by Muslim men around the train station I have been bothered by Africans at the train stations and congrats in Austria an African tried to steal my phone. I don't feel unsafe in Germany but I don't feel that much safer than I do here in the States. In both places I pay attention to what's going on around me. And maybe I have a sign on my back that says pick on me. Lol

@@caciliawhy5195 Yes, those things can happen. And I feel you about the "pick on me" sign. Happend to me a few times when I was younger. But never by Arab or African fellow human beings in my life, but by english and american soldiers. One english soldier even threatend to kill me, but he was drunk and I couldn't take him serious. Such things also depend on the environment. For me it was the work in the bar scene, but I could count on the security colleagues if necessary (and a few of them were muslim, so I have just positive experiences here). I don't pay much attention about my security, I don't really feel the need to, even so I had a few situations. I was scared when I was in the US for sure, you just have to be at the wrong place at the wrong time! I know a young guy, 24 at the time, from germany who rented a car in the us and was cought driving slightly above the speed limit, he got pulled over and threatened at gunpoint by a highway patrol officer for no reason, he developed serious anxiety about it back home. Sure you can get robbed or killed in Indonesia or Costa Rica too but when a first world country has so little control over their armed authorities and seldom punishes them for serious violence against the people they are meant to protect, now THAT is what I call a scary country to be in. ps: no it was not Texas or Florida, it was in California.
@jeffmorse645
@jeffmorse645 4 жыл бұрын
I've lived in California my entire life and I have NEVER heard of anyone I know being pulled over at gunpoint by a highway patrol officer. Never. I've received about four speeding tickets in my younger years and they were always very professional and polite. For that matter I don't know anyone who's been the victim of gun violence. If you're not involved in drugs or gangs your chance of being involved in violent crime is pretty small. The vast majority of people here live their lives as safely as anywhere.

I was in the states like 7-8 times for business and some extra days sightseeing after the job. Mainly in Midwest. Sightseeing in NY and Chicago. 1) After talking with Americans about student loans I really dont get it and it is a rip off in my eyes. They on the otherhand couldnt understand that I didnt pay for my education. I the US are wasting really alot of talent from poor families. 2) Private health ensurance must be a nightmare. After that what I was told about the system first hand I would ensure myself. I would bring instead all the spare money to an bank account. 3) I felt very save. Even in Chicago. 4) People are very friendly 5) In the Cities the people are "normal". In the midwest the are like stereotypes. I have never seen so much fat and ugly people. 6) this super religious churches with really strange names are like kind of creepy. 7) The christian radio stations in the mid west are much fun. 8) I totally like the let´s do it mentality. totally amazing. 9) people dont walk. 10) the old downtowns are so beautiful in small towns but lost places. everything moved to walmart, McDonalds outside the town. this is so sad.

in 1982 I spent a year in the states, at an eastcoast university on an exchange program. Whenever somebody heard that I was from Germany, his or her next question was "And do you wanna go back?" Obviously nobody over there could imagine anybody to go back, once you had reached the shores of god's own country. That year in the states gave me a lot, but it also made me a patriot. For the first time I realized that I was german through and through, and that that could be a good thing.

NALF: I was stationed in what was West Germany from Feb. '87 to Oct. '91 and heard a lot of the same from my German friends. I also heard many of my fellow soldiers complain about Germany not being America. Some soldiers would complain because they could not watch American sports like baseball and complain because the stores in Nurenberg would close at 1800 hrs everyday except Thursday when they were open until 2000 hrs. I got along well and eventually married a German woman, but some of my friends and acquaintances hated living there because IMHO, it wasn't America and they wanted to go home.

I think the safety aspect that is brought up when talking about going back to the States right now aims at the way the US handle the Corona virus, not at the general differences which already were there before the virus hit. And I totally can understand that. I have many friends living in the US, mostly German expats and they all told me they wish they could be in Germany right now, solely based on how Germany responds to the virus vs how the US does that. I do however understand Nalf wanting to see his family and with the season being delayed etc this indeed would be a good time.

I think the perception of how dangerous the covid-situation is in any one place is not fine grained enough. If you look at the number of cases per 100k inhabitants in this map and look at the “Landkreis” (county) level, the numbers go from about 30 to 1500 - depending wether you live in “Uckermark” vs “Tirschenreuth”... interaktiv.tagesspiegel.de/lab/karte-sars-cov-2-in-deutschland-landkreise/ - the situation will be similar in the US, depending very much on wether you live in a hotspot or not.

„ I don’t want to live in Germany“ or „Germany is bad“ is what Germans heard for decades since WW2, understandably. So it is nothing new for Germans. But I guess it is new for Americans. Based on what happened the last years and how the present corona crises is handled it isn’t a surprise. I lived in the US for 3 years, so I see it differently of course. I am not scared to go there or to live there, I made great experiences. It wouldn’t be the country of my choice to raise kids or to live there forever but I would love to go back and travel and meet friends there. But the views of people in Europe are understandable.

I know what follows is off-topic. But I think you've learned to expect that from me. We’ve had ducks showing up in every video lately. Why? Because they’re so cute? These ducks are an odd type of duck. They never make a sound. Remember the geese honking at 3:20 in “Back in Time to 1945 in Germany”? They were very loud, and their honking very annoying. Could it be that the ducks, the geese, the fowl are there to show us that Nalf doesn’t hear, isn’t bothered by the Besserwisserei anymore? So, we keep going to Scotland again. Really? Let me think about this. Why Scotland? Because Nalf wants to tease/please Cody and Speedy? Or maybe it’s just an excuse to throw in more drone footage. You know, that crutch again, the one he promised to throw away. So many crutches

Especially as you can stay a really long time with your family and going home is very expensive and not possible for just a weekend. Funnily for someone living in Greece Germany doesn't look as safe as Germans themselves perceive it. We see the numbers and go "60 deaths in one day?!!! We have daily between 0 and maximum 4. I have been to the states, though I never lived there….It's fun for a holiday, lots to see and explore, but living there? In a country which has worse health care, lower food standards, a social net with huge holes to fall through, huge problems with racism, a terrifying police force, regular school shootings and sometimes lead in the walls or even the water? Where the equality of women is not part of the constitution, women who need an abortion are being terrorised, and people are okay with electing someone like Trump? Yeah, big pass. Not to mention the lack of bread (toast is not bread!!!). That would be a deal breaker in itself. Frankly, I don't see the US like you see Florida. I see the US like Trump sees his so called "shit hole countries". It's a basket case, an underdeveloped country in desperate need for reform.

My first time in the States was back in '85. Guess where.... Miami, Dade County, Florida. :-) I would say that staying abroad is much more difficult for an American than for a German. I didn't realize Floridians were crazy until you claimed them to be. Sorta different though. :-) Keep the good stuff going @NALF. Thanks !

Nalf, do you feel offended (even a little bit) when people say they wouldn't want to be in the States right now and stuff like this? I have to admit I feel the same way they do but I would be hesitant to say something like that to a US American. Also, when did you pick up "Geil" in your German speech? :D I think I've never heard you say it before. Edit: At least I would not say these things about the US like you portrayed your German friends doing it. I would probably address it but more cautiously so as to not hurt your feelings.

If I could throw a question to you it would be this one: I've read that players of American football are not really paid here in Germany. Most do get nothing at all, it's not regarded as a professional sports which could pay your bills. Even a fifth league soccer player gets more money than a first league American football player. Is that different for you? If not, what is your main source of income here?

As of today Oregon has had 3,416 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 134 deaths. That's a vastly lower rate of infection than Germany. The Western US has been much better at social distancing policies and the infection rate is considerably lower than the states in the Eastern US. For another comparison California has about 1.5 million more people than Canada, but we have fewer infections and a little over half the deaths (and you don't hear anyone saying "Don't go to Canada"). Basically, its a big country and the individual states have had different approaches to containing this pandemic. As usually though people outside the US tend to lump the entire country together.

@@MSFloriandel Oregon has tested half the population Germany has as a percentage but even if you extrapolate that to the same level their infection rate is still lower. Again, the West Coast of the US has been a lot better at social distancing and more aggressive with stay at home orders than most of the country.

i am here in the US and i think it’s a chaotic mess how they are handling this crisis it’s very different from state to state ( NYC and California and NM are handling it well- Florida , Georgia, Tex ... not so much- but, if you have health insurance and you can isolate yourself and stay away from your brothers 🤣😉you should be good- i just don’t know about the airplane flight ✈️ i saw reports how they pack people in there ( maybe fly Lufthansa?)

I understand wanting to be with your family but by getting in a plane you are exposing yourself and also exposing your family thereafter. Airplanes are very dirty. The airlines don’t wipe down the seats, arm rests, trays, seatbelts, the buttons/knobs. Also the air is not well filtered. Overall is a better decision to just stay where you are for now.

I've been in CA for a while. It really feels a lot like Europe. The further you go to the South, the more it feels like Spain. San Francisco feels a bit like the UK. My jaw dropping moment was, when I saw a small leaflet in a hotel: "Save water, use your towels/blankets more than one day." I thought, well, water saving just arrived here. Great. And then I found the copyright mark on it... (c) 1975. That was astonishing. And all other environmental protections, like banning of plastic bag, using recycled water for irrigation, a decent public transportation... it felt like Europe. But on the other hand, when I was in SFO, I was walking through a park in a rather wealthy area. And there was a huge pile of old and stinky cloths. Mixed with card board and some bottles. I was curios, why such a pile of rubbish was in that cute park. And I went closer. And then I recognized, that there was a human "living" within all that pile of dirt. I was shocked.

They write number of cases but it is very different between New York and South Dakota and California. This causes people in Europe think that in USA is doomsday. But still I don't consider USA as safer place for living, been in Washington state and such homeless situation in downtown I have never seen in Europe, but shore was nice
