Namco : The Tower of Druaga (1984, 1997) - ドルアーガの塔

About 1 month ago, I unearthed a CD "Namco History Vol.2" which released in November, 1997 from the old box. It is a collection of old arcade games from Namco, including "Tank Battalion", "GROBDA", "RALLY X", "New RALLY X", "Phozon" and "The Tower of Druaga".
Although this CD was for windows 95, fortunately I was able to install it in Windows XP. And I played "The Tower of Druaga" after a long time. After all, it was outstandingly interesting.
Well, I made this movie. A playing guide is displayed every Floor. English may be strange...

いやはや、14～15年ぶりに遊んだのですが、物凄く面白かったです。せっかくだから１フロアごとに攻略情報を表示するような動画を作ろうかと思い付いたのですが、既に極めて優れた動画が上がっているのを発見。ということで、差別化を図るべく攻略情報を無理やり英語で書いてみました。つかれました。

I've read the requirements to beat this game has you having to have certain items to survive the later floors, miss out on anything, you don't finish it. And the treasure chests require you to do certain things for them to appear. For a game from the early 80's it is extremely deep. Also it was awfully nice to have a guide for this game included, kept you from ultimately having to redo the entire game from the start.

But if you just follow steps from a guide it's barely like playing a game at that point, the point is to figure out what you're supposed to do but THAT's not fun because it's intentionally unfair and extremely cryptic

@@HardDiskDog Yeah, the game kind of gets kneecapped hard if you're not playing in an arcade or a gaming community with a very collaborative community, unfortunately. Ambitious, but as awkward as a pioneering game like this gets.

Yes, having the guide for the game was essential for completing it, as some of the requirements can get a bit tricky as early as Floor 13. Also, there are two floors in which if you failed to do the requirements, you get ZAPPED, and you lose some important items!

As a kid (back in 2000), I first thought that "The Tower of Druaga" had up to 99 floors since the tower was pretty big. LOL I also realized back then how Ki looks so much like me as well. I personally first discovered "The Tower of Druaga" in either October or November 2000 from "Namco Museum Vol 3", but I'm leaning more towards October.

MrSmegheneghan It is not, but still very limited. If you get hit by a slime, you're instantly dead. If you're hit by a wizard spell, you're also instantly dead unless you have the treasure from floor 52. As for Knights, it is strange. There are strong and weak sword attacks. You have to charge left and right to get the kill. If you start attacking from the left and left only, you will most likely be killed. This is especially important to remember with the mirror knights and black Knights. It doesn't exist anymore, but the IOS version of this game had a built in feature to view HP.

I didn't know the pickaxe could be used twice. I saw it in the Japanese version, and thought it was exclusive to their country. I asked about it, but they probably couldn't understand me. I wonder if the blue and red wisp stages could be manipulated with RNG, because I honestly find that complete bullshit. I've beaten this game 2 times out of the 300 times I've played it. I really have a love-hate relationship with it. The difficulty is unlike anything I have ever known.

Wisps always follow the left/right wall according to color, no RNG at all.

@@Aethelia Oh, really? So, you're telling me I can always determine where they will move? I must learn this strategy. But sadly, this game is so niche I don't imagine a tutorial video existing. When you say "according to color", does that mean a blue or a red wisp will always follow the same direction?

This is in general a great version of the game, but the sound emulation is off; less high end clarity than the original Namco WSG chips, and especially in the level start fanfare, it sounds significantly out of tune.
